About This Pub

You know, when I think about James St. Tavern, it's one of those places that just feels like a proper local gem in Oxford – tucked away and full of character. The atmosphere is spot on, with live music and open mic sessions that really get the energy flowing, making it a fantastic spot for a casual catch-up or a fun night out. The staff are absolute gems, always so welcoming and quick to sort out any needs, whether it's gluten-free options or just a friendly chat. And the food? Well, they've got some cracking choices like those delicious waffles and pancakes, plus plenty for vegetarians and vegans, all at prices that feel fair and straightforward. But, let's be honest, it's not all perfect – service can drag on a bit, even on quieter days, and I've heard a few tales of dishes not quite living up to the hype, like missing bits in the Shakshuka or bacon that's had a bit too much time in the pan. Still, overall, it's a place I'd recommend for its charm and vibe, as long as you go in with realistic expectations and maybe plan for a relaxed pace.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Staff are incredibly friendly and accommodating, always going the extra mile to make you feel at home.
  • Live music and open mic nights bring a lively vibe that's perfect for enjoying a pint and some entertainment.
  • They offer great food options, including gluten-free and vegan choices, with tasty dishes like savoury waffles that hit the spot.
  • It's reasonably priced, giving good value for money without breaking the bank.
Cons
  • Service can be a tad slow, even when the place isn't packed, which might leave you waiting longer than expected.
  • Some dishes fall short, like the Shakshuka that missed key ingredients or overcooked items that don't quite deliver.
  • There are occasional inconsistencies in food quality, so it might not always be as exciting as hoped.

Went for an open mic night and the staff were really kind and understanding and accommodating. Gluten-free options and a really warm and friendly atmosphere. The pub has a really nice atmosphere, the music was amazing and the staff were more than brilliant. I felt completely welcome and they did all they could to accommodate myself and my wheelchair because unfortunately it's not a fully accessible pub. Being slightly ambulant I would go again because they made accommodation for me by the door of the Pavillion, which you can get in if someone asks.

Not a bad brunch but the place was not even a quarter full and it still took 40 minutes to arrive. The full english is OK for a tenner (although the bacon probably didn't need all those 40 minutes of cooking!). The Shakshuka was disappointing in that despite what the menu said there were no beans or feta in it.

Sunday day chill vibe with live music/open mic from 3pm which was lovely. This gem is tucked away off the main drag of Cowley street in Oxford, and is just a perfect spot. Friendly atmosphere, talented crowd, laid back gorgeousness. If I didn't have to drive home I would have been there all evening. Great beer garden too which I will happily sit in in summer.

I wandered into James Street Tavern last week for THE most delightful brunch. They have recently added breakfast/brunch hours serving up delicious egg, waffle and pancake concoctions as well as vegan and vegetarian food. Try the savory cheddar waffles….you won’t be disappointed! Creative weekend specials provide a nice surprise if you want something different but the menu offers standard fare at a great price. The tavern feels fun and alive. Try brunch at the Tavern while enjoying weekend fairs nearby. I’m adding this place to the top of my list of favorite weekend breakfast spots in Oxford!

Local BrewDog pub about 1/2 mile South of Oxford City. Great selection of their own and guest beers. They offer parties for your pooch, including food and dog-friendly beer. Food was good, generally but the heritage tomato salad was a very unexciting salad and it wasn't finished because the tomatoes were very hard and underripe. There is an accessible toilet which is necessary as there are two steps into the gents loo.
