About This Pub

Ah, The Snowy Owl – it's one of those classic country pubs that really pulls you in with its cosy fireside charm and that inviting feel, especially if you're popping in after a wander through the nearby woods. I have to say, the staff are often top-notch, dishing out friendly service that makes you feel like a regular, even if it's your first visit, and the dog-friendly vibe is just brilliant for us who like to bring the pup along. The food can be a winner too, like their fish and chips which are fresh and full of flavour, paired with a pint in the garden on a nice day – pure bliss. But, let's be honest, it's not all rosy; I've heard from a few mates that the roasts and other mains can sometimes fall flat, with overcooked meats, tiny portions, and a lack of that hearty punch you'd expect for the money. There have been times when service drags a bit, leaving you waiting for what should be straightforward. Overall, it's a solid spot for a relaxed catch-up, but I'd suggest going in with realistic expectations – pick the dishes that shine and you'll likely have a great time, though it might not be the place for a fancy blowout meal.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The staff are absolutely brilliant – friendly and welcoming, making you feel right at home, especially if you're new to the area.
  • The cosy decor is spot on, with warm fireplaces and beautiful gardens that give off those proper relaxing vibes, perfect for a chilly day or a sunny afternoon.
  • Some of the food hits the mark, like the fish and chips with homemade tartar sauce – it's fresh, tasty, and just what you'd want from a country pub.
  • It's dog-friendly and in a great spot for walks, with paths leading to nearby woods, making it ideal for a post-hike pint.
  • They've got a well-stocked bar with cask ales, wines, and gins, plus hearty classics on the menu that go down a treat in such a lovely setting.
Cons
  • Food quality can be inconsistent; some dishes like the beef or belly pork come out overcooked or chewy, which is a real shame for the price.
  • Portion sizes feel a bit skimpy at times, especially for a Sunday roast where you'd expect more bang for your buck around £22 a head.
  • Service can be hit or miss – while it's often excellent, there have been instances of slow responses, like waiting ages for extras or the wrong dish.
  • A few meals lack flavour or arrive barely warm, leaving you wishing for that melt-in-the-mouth experience the menu promises.
  • It's a bit pricey for what you get sometimes, which might not sit well if you're after a filling, no-fuss meal.

Racheal gave us brilliant customer service at the Snowy Owl — so friendly and welcoming, especially since I’m not a local and was up visiting my boyfriend. I absolutely loved the decor too — it gave proper cosy vibes, like being by a warm fireplace on a cold day. The fish and chips were delicious, and finishing off with sticky toffee pudding was a treat. I was over the moon to find vegan custard on the menu too — such a lovely surprise! 💕

What a disappointment. We went for Sunday lunch and this is what we got. We paid around £22 each. For this price you could go to an amazing restaurant and not feel hungry after. The roasties were anemic, the beef was terribly overcooked. Terrible portion sizes, looks like the veg is missing. My Mother In Law found tin toil she almost swallowed. When mentioned to the waitress she just said oh well sorry. Not even that she would pass this on to the chef. Wouldn't return. It's a shame as we have been before and enjoyed an evening meal but I've never felt so ripped off!

Food was barely warm. Belly pork chewy although they changed it when I complained. Was slightly better . Not as described slow braised I expected it to be melt in the mouth. Menu states lashing of gravy. I was given 2 cms in a tiny pot. Did ask for more but that fell on deaf ears. Pigs in blankets were an off colour gave them to my dog. She was ill that night . The fish was so thin and small. Will not be returning.

We had a lunch table booked for 3 today. They had taken notice of our extra request and accommodated us really well. We all had the fish and chips which came with the best homemade tartar sauce and light fresh fish in perfect batter. Homemade chips were just right. Service was excellent and friendly. Free parking and a historical building full of “snowy owls”! What’s not to like! We will definitely return.

Excellent service from Ben. The food was lovely but didn’t have loads of flavour. We ordered the hot drink and mini pudding. The hot drink arrived and we waited about 15 minutes for our pudding but nothing arrived. We were about to ask for the bill but then our pudding arrived although there was no friendly greeting or apology from the server. Overall, it was a great experience and a lovely pub to visit.
