About This Pub

Ah, The Sir John Franklin – it's one of those pubs that really pulls you in with its historical charm and that prime spot on the High Street in Greenhithe. I mean, just imagine sipping a pint in the beer garden overlooking the Thames; it's got this lovely, laid-back feel that's perfect for unwinding after a long day or catching up with mates over a game on the telly. The staff are an absolute delight, always ready with a smile and a good yarn, which really makes the place feel welcoming. On the flip side, though, it's not without its drawbacks – I've heard a few grumbles about the lack of real ales and the food not being up to much, so you might end up sticking to drinks only. Plus, if you're thinking of popping in with your dog, they might not let you through the door, which is a bit of a pity. Overall, it's a decent local haunt with more hits than misses, but it's worth knowing what you're getting into for a balanced visit.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The history of the place is absolutely fascinating; it's tied to Sir John Franklin's adventures, which makes for some great stories over a drink.
  • The staff are really friendly and welcoming, always up for a chat which adds to that cosy pub feel.
  • There's a lovely beer garden with views of the Thames – perfect for a sunny afternoon pint and a bit of relaxation.
  • It's got a good vibe for watching sports with TNT and Sky Sports on offer, so it's spot on if you're into your footie or rugby.
  • They've got a wide selection of drinks, making it easy to find something refreshing to enjoy in a traditional setting.
Cons
  • It's not the most dog-friendly spot, as they've turned away folks with pets, which could be a downer for those who like to bring their four-legged mates.
  • The atmosphere can feel a bit lacking at times, especially if it's quiet, so it might not always buzz with energy.
  • They often run out of real ales, which is a shame for anyone craving that authentic British pint experience.
  • The food doesn't get much praise; it's not up to scratch, so you might want to grab a bite elsewhere before heading in.
  • The website could do with an update on things like their policies, to avoid any surprises when you arrive.

Can't tell you about the experience as we were politely refused entry because we had a dog Happy that the pub allowed to refuse who they like but please update your website accordingly so no dog owners waste there time again ....... and you will lose a lot of custom. Sure there's a reason but .....

Good local pub with a nice view at the back of the thames. Lacking in atmosphere and decent food though. Also ive been a few times and they never seem to have any real ales available.

I've been wanting to visit this place for years. The history. The pub used to be The "White hart" in 1845. Sir John Franklin left here to search the Northwest Passage, never to be seen again. A memorial plaque is in the garden at the rear. Staff is very friendly. My only disappointment was that it's not a B&B. The old building is beautiful. Would love to stay there.

Great old pub just by the river side, not too big and not too small has a beer garden aswell, really nice atmosphere to just have a pint and relax and maybe play some pool too. Haven’t tried the food so cant say anything about that.

Great old pub with a history near London. The drive from london just 30 minutes. All kind of beer wine and ale. Staff is very friendly and cordially. The pub old collection of mugs, glasses and utensils is its feature. It is on bank of river and outside sitting is there to enjoy all the days. Good arrangement to watch sports. Games playing arrangements. Accept cash and cards.
