About This Pub

Ah, The Shrub and Shutter – it's one of those places in Brixton that really captures the vibe of a neighbourhood spot, doesn't it? I've got to say, the cocktails are a highlight; they're so inventive and tasty, you'd be hard-pressed not to find something that tickles your fancy. Pair that with some cracking small plates and wines, and you're in for a lovely evening. The atmosphere is just spot on too – cosy, intimate, and with all those little details that make it feel welcoming, like you're stepping into someone's clever home bar. But, and I hate to bring it up, there are times when the service lets the side down a bit. A few folks have mentioned run-ins with staff who were a tad abrupt or even added tips without so much as a by-your-leave, which can really sour the experience. Plus, if you're trying to book for a group, it might not always go smoothly, so it's worth double-checking. Overall, though, with its strong reputation and that feel-good buzz, I'd still recommend giving it a go – just go in with your eyes open and you'll likely have a cracking time.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The cocktails are absolutely spot on – innovative, unique, and full of flavour, making it a brilliant spot for trying something new.
  • The food is a real treat, with delicious small plates and standout dishes like those oxtail nuggets that keep you coming back for more.
  • It's got such a cosy and welcoming atmosphere in the heart of Brixton, perfect for a relaxed evening with friends or a special occasion.
  • The bar feels like a hidden gem with lovely little touches, like the pictures and bottles that make the space feel personal and inviting.
Cons
  • Service can be hit or miss, with some experiences marred by rude staff who might add tips without asking or handle bookings poorly.
  • There have been a few gripes about not honouring reservations properly, which could leave you feeling let down on a big night out.
  • It only opens five days a week, so you'll have to plan around that if you're hoping for a spontaneous visit on Sundays or Mondays.

It hurts to leave a bad review to a local business, but they really let me down. I booked a space in the bar for 12+ people for my graduation, having come in and chatted to the staff and agreed a date and time. I was happy to put a deposit down but they said it would not be necessary. We arrived ready to celebrate, and the bar was shut. The owner said sorry, he forgot to put it in the system, and they thought it would be a quiet evening. I cannot understand or accept why you would accept a large booking without logging it, in doing so ruining someone's plans for such a special occasion. I received somewhat of an apology but that's it, no offer to come and open up, nor any other way to make it up to me. Really disappointing, and I can't say I'll ever go back.

A real gem! We were looking for something interesting and a bit different and this ticked the boxes. Intimate, friendly and everything was delicious. The standout for me was the Oxtail Nuggets - perfectly spiced. However everything was great quality and we had most of the dishes on the menu…

The food was great and so were the cocktails however the female waitress was so inappropriate and rude that it left a very sour taste in our mouths. To add insult to injury she added in a tip and despite the fact we disputed it, refused to remove it. Virtually threw the menu at us to show she was entitled to it and refused to provide a receipt as ‘we are paperless’ but also refused to email a receipt. I will be contacting trading standards - totally unacceptable (and I’m usually not inclined to complain given that I have worked in the service industry for years)

Understated cocktail bar which has a huge space at the back for more tables and people. It's a really welcoming venue with lots of little touches like pictures, drinks and bottles. The cocktail bar is right in front of you and looks like a workshop! Good value for cocktails at £10 ish each. Great for dates or catching up in general. Does do food and also wine but we didn't indulge.
