About This Pub

Ah, The Ship & Mitre – it's one of those pubs that really stands out in Liverpool, isn't it? From what I've gathered, it's a proper gem for anyone who loves a good pint; they've got this massive array of real ales, craft beers, and even some German and Belgian imports that are kept in tip-top condition, which is always a winner. The atmosphere is just lovely – think cosy nooks with a bit of nautical flair from its history, making it feel welcoming and unpretentious, perfect for a relaxed catch-up or even popping in with the dog. The food's another highlight; simple, tasty options that hit the spot without breaking the bank, and they've got events like beer festivals that keep things lively. On the flip side, it does get packed at times, especially on a Saturday night, so you might end up queuing or standing if you're not quick off the mark. And while the walk-in policy keeps it casual, it could be a bit of a pain if you're after a guaranteed table. All in all, it's a solid choice for beer enthusiasts, with that community spirit shining through, but just keep in mind it might not be the spot for a quiet, fancy dinner – more your classic pub experience through and through.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The beer selection is absolutely brilliant – they've got the largest range of hand-pulled ales in Merseyside, plus loads of continental and craft options to suit every taste.
  • It's got that classic, cosy pub feel with a nod to its history, like the ship-themed decor downstairs, making it a proper homely spot for a pint.
  • The food is spot on; simple, hearty dishes from their kitchen that pair perfectly with a beer, and it's all reasonably priced too.
  • Dog-friendly and welcoming, with events like beer festivals that add a fun community vibe – it's a great place to catch up with mates.
  • Service is friendly and efficient, especially with the hatch for food, and it's managed well as an independent freehouse.
Cons
  • It can get pretty busy, especially on weekends, so you might have to wait for a seat or deal with a bit of a crowd.
  • Walk-ins only means no bookings, which could be a hassle if you're planning a big group outing.
  • The service style, like ordering food through a hatch, is convenient but might feel a tad impersonal for some folks.

A lovely traditional real ale pubs in Liverpool, great selection of ales that are well kept and nice atmosphere all round. Also has a very good selection of German beers including Veltins and bitburger. Has a dart board and plenty of seating.

Visited the ship and mitre on a Saturday night and it was busy at 5:45pm. The beer selection was huge - including bottles. They had low alcohol options too on draught, including a 2.2%, 3.2% and 3.7%. We ordered a meal and the service was through a hatch which is convenient. And the food was all brought within 20 min which was great! The scouse stew was amazing - so rich and everything was melting in your mouth. The bread was super fluffy and soft with a good amount of butter ! The sausage currywurst was delicious too, I just wished it was even bigger - would probably get a different stew next time. We upgraded the side of fries to be the loaded salt and pepper fries and they were very tasty - a bit too salty at times but delicious flavours and perfectly cooked fries. I gave 4 stars for atmosphere because there were parts of the pub that smelled a bit but the pub was bustling and has great history (open since 1822), and delicious food.

Top dollar pub, old school. I was there for an after show drinks upstairs which is just the most perfect setting if you’re keeping it real. Great selection of beers, all well kept. Great food from The One Pan Band at reasonable prices. Great staff.

Reminds me of US bars, pre craft beer when the wonders of Belgium, Germany and England were king. Homey feel, nothing fussy just clearly done with lots of love for the beers and customers. Visiting from London it's apparent what an asset as a community hub this is. Hearty food offer from the kitchen of One Pan Band really satisfying, the curry wurst sausage was a banger. Constantly rotating cask selection will make any beer lover or CAMRA member happy. Absolutely back first thing the next time we visit Liverpool!

I liked the large choice. It was super stuff. If I ever enter the Liverpool again, I'll make a monumental effort to drink from their inappropriate glass vessels. Getting the wrong glass was hilario TBH.
