About This Pub

You know, when you step into Doctor Duncan's, it's like taking a trip back in time – this place is packed with Liverpool's history, from its ties to the city's first Medical Health Officer to the beautifully restored tiled interior and quirky displays. I love how they've kept that authentic feel, with a great lineup of real ales and craft beers that really hit the spot for a relaxed afternoon or evening. The food, when it's on offer, is proper comforting stuff, like their traditional Scouse, and it's all about those classic British dishes that leave you satisfied. But, to be fair, it's not perfect; sometimes the food service falls short, with options not always available, and on quieter days, it can feel a bit empty, missing that lively pub energy. Still, the staff are usually spot on, making it a welcoming spot overall for anyone wanting to soak up some history with their drink. If you're after a balanced mix of old-school charm and good times, it's worth a visit, but maybe check ahead for the food situation.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The pub's rich history and stunning Victorian interior make it a real treat, with fascinating displays and a nod to Liverpool's past that adds so much character.
  • They've got a fantastic selection of real ales and craft beers – perfect for anyone who loves a good pint and wants to try something quirky or traditional.
  • The food is hearty and full of classic British favourites, like Scouse, which is spot on for a comforting meal in a welcoming setting.
  • Staff are generally helpful and friendly, always up for a chat or answering questions about the place, which makes you feel right at home.
Cons
  • Food isn't always available, which can be a real shame if you're popping in for a bite and end up going hungry.
  • It can get a bit too quiet at times, especially on Sundays, making the atmosphere feel a tad lifeless when you'd fancy a bit more buzz.
  • Service might not always be as warm or attentive as you'd hope, based on some experiences shared by others.
  • Certain menu items can be unavailable, which limits your choices and might leave you a bit disappointed.

I used to go to this pub when it was a Caines pub. I was thrilled to see that none of it's character has been taken away. It also still sells some real quality real ales. The staff were very helpful and did not mind being asked questions Only downside, no food was available.

What an amazing pub! Like a maze ! Love how there are descriptions around wall and different areas to sit in. On the walls are glass displays with vials and jars and medical equipment. Next to the stairs a dentist spit bowl and drill!! Will deffo come here again

Very quiet on a Sunday afternoon, I was one of only a few people. Almost too quiet, kind of a bummer. Had a great English Stout from cask but otherwise the service could have been friendlier and the interior a bit brighter. Classic and rustic with some beautiful rooms but it seems to be missing something special.

A great find. Beautiful interior, great selection of ales and the food is top notch and great value - only let down today was the number of items that were unavailable (pulled pork and fish - a star knocked off for that). Friendly staff and I laughed when I said I wanted to take a photo of the bar and the barmaid said she'd "get out of the way" before dropping to the floor behind the bar! Hilarious - a great sport! Will definitely come back the next time we're in Liverpool.
