About This Pub

Ah, The Ship – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a proper local gem in Romford, with its rich history stretching back nearly 250 years. I have to say, the food really steals the show; whether it's the classic fish and chips or that mouthwatering cheese and bacon burger, everything's made with care and comes out piping hot. The staff are an absolute treat too – so approachable and full of smiles, making every visit feel like catching up with old mates. And let's not forget the cosy nooks with log fires or the beer garden for sunnier days; it's brilliant for quiz nights or just unwinding with a pint of cask ale. On the flip side, it does get bustling, especially for Sunday lunches, so you might find yourself waiting for a table if you haven't booked ahead, and from what I've heard, the occasional visit might not hit the mark quite right, like one chap who had a so-so first experience. Overall, though, it's a solid choice for anyone after a friendly spot with great grub – I'd definitely pop in if you're in the area, but maybe check the timings first to avoid any queues.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food is absolutely brilliant – think hearty home-cooked classics like cheese and bacon burgers, fish and chips, and even a tasty Goan fish curry that keeps you coming back for more.
  • The staff are so welcoming and friendly; they really make you feel at home, with one reviewer even raving about Sarah who adds a fun vibe to the place.
  • It's got that cosy, traditional pub atmosphere with log fires, a lovely beer garden, and even quiz nights that make for a great night out.
  • Being dog-friendly is a real winner – they bring out treats and water for your furry friends, which is perfect if you're popping in with the pooch.
  • With its nearly 250-year history, it's got that authentic charm and serves up refreshing cask ales that pair wonderfully with the grub.
Cons
  • There might be the odd hiccup with bookings or expectations not quite matching up, as one person mentioned their first visit didn't live up to the hype entirely.
  • It can get pretty busy, especially on Sundays or for events, which might mean waits for tables or a more lively atmosphere than you'd fancy on a quiet evening.

Lovely local pub. Food was great, service was really good and super friendly and dog friendly too. Staff brought out treats and water for our dogs. So hard to find a dog friendly pub- dog friendly meaning you can eat indoors with your dogs so this place will definitely be a regular spot now for me and my friends with our dogs.

Lovely pub with great food and drinks and great service. The Goan fish curry is amazing - the prawns are perfectly cooked and delicious. My mate thoroughly enjoyed his Gammon and chips. Nice and cosy with log fires and also decent smoking area out back. Probably my favourite pub

Please read my review before visiting as I hope this will help you enjoy your experience. This was our first visit to the ship after reading good reviews online. The main pub bar area and main dining area are very nice and cosy, with a lovely atmosphere. We booked a table for eight people. Unfortunately, we were not seated in the main dining area. There is a smaller dining area behind the bar which is where our table was. This area has no atmosphere and is right next to the door to the garden and smoking area and the kitchen. The day we visited was freezing cold outside and a gale was blowing through the old wooden door especially with people coming in and out, so it was a bit nippy. I mentioned this to the waitress and she was very, very helpful and arranged for an extra heater to be brought in. So a five star for atmosphere in the main pub, and for their service. However, I personally found the food very average and nothing special. I was hoping for more going by the reviews but I found the menu fairly basic and the quality and taste of the food very standard, not bad just very average. If you're going to visit the ship, I would definitely recommend booking a table in the main restaurant only and confirm that with your reservation.
