About This Pub
Ah, The Shaftesbury, what a lovely little spot in Richmond! I've got to say, it's one of those pubs that just makes you feel welcome from the get-go, with staff who are always cheerful and on point. The food really stands out – whether it's a hearty roast on a Sunday or a solid burger, everything's cooked to perfection, and they've got some brilliant options for those with dietary needs, like gluten-free choices. The atmosphere is just spot on too; it's cosy and homely, ideal for a casual drink or a meal with mates, and it's kept nice and clean, which is always a plus. On the flip side, it can be a bit on the quiet side sometimes, especially if you pop in later in the day, so if you're hoping for a lively crowd, you might find it a tad mellow. Also, the opening hours aren't always crystal clear, so it's worth double-checking if you're planning an evening out. All in all, it's a solid choice for a relaxed pint or a bite to eat – I'd definitely recommend giving it a go if you're in the area, as it's got that genuine pub charm without any fuss.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming, making you feel right at home as soon as you walk in.
-
The food is absolutely spot on – think delicious roasts, burgers, and even great gluten-free options, with generous portions that leave you satisfied.
-
It's got a lovely, cosy atmosphere with a clean and uncluttered feel, perfect for a relaxed catch-up or a family meal.
-
They serve up a cracking pint, especially if you're a fan of Young's brews, and it's just a stone's throw from Richmond Circus.
-
Portion sizes are generous, and they even provide snacks to nibble on while you wait, adding a nice touch to the experience.
Cons
-
It can be a bit quiet at times, like on a Sunday afternoon, so if you're after a buzzing vibe, it might not always hit the mark.
-
The operating hours seem a tad inconsistent across different sources, which could catch you out if you're planning a late visit.
-
While the food and service are great, it's not the largest space, so it might feel a bit snug if it's busy.

We had an overnight stay in Richmond and needed somewhere to eat that also catered for gluten free. Came across these guys and felt welcomed, the atmosphere was great, food amazing had a throughly enjoyable visit and if ever back in Richmond I know where to eat !!!! The photo is of the gluten free Shaftesbury Burger 🙂 it was also quiz night when we visited (Sunday 11th May) and was lovely to see a mixed age range and that dogs were also catered for!! Thank you to all the staff 😀
We went for Easter Sunday lunch and the roasts were delicious! Staff were friendly and kept on top of the table. It was relatively quiet Sunday as we went at 4pm but overall we had a great time and will be back!
We went there on a Sunday, but we weren't interested in having a roast, so we had two burgers and our kid had their pig in duvets (they basically had a large sausage about 5cm in diameter covered in bacon, then sliced off about 5 generous discs and served with gravy) which was delicious. Then very nice fries and a tomato and cucumber salad. All very tasty and the drinks were really nice.
We deducted one star because of the misleading dessert.... When you read white chocolate and strawberry cheesecake, you expect a nice solid cake made of a mix of creamy cheese, and in this case white chocolate mixed in etc. The dessert would get 0 stars if possible. It was a disgusting mix of saw dust in the bottom of a cup with cheese the consistency of yoghurt and some mystery strawberry cubes....
We regret not getting dessert at the Italian place next door.

A neighbourhood pub, that we have frequented over the years. I love the homely, cosy interior, and the staff are very lovely. Often just to have a drink. But we recently discovered that they also do pretty good food. Portion sizes for the dishes are also generous. They provide snacks to nibble on as well like toasted bread and butter, and veggie crisps. But one thing to note is that this is not somewhere you go if you are in a hurry. It looks like they have a very small crew. The food service is very slow, we were waiting for about an hour before our main courses showed up, even when the pub was not even full, and we had come in off-peak times.
A pretty Young's pub, close to Richmond Circus, The Shaftesbury all you could hope for in a small(ISH) pub. Great service early in the day and a great pint. A clean uncluttered feel to the place, lovely pub!
