About This Pub

You know, when I think about The Royalty up on Otley Chevin, it's got this lovely, welcoming feel that's just right for kicking back after a ramble in the countryside. The views across Wharfedale are absolutely stunning – you'd be hard-pressed not to linger a bit longer just to soak it in, whether you're in the cosy spot by the fire or out on the terrace watching the planes. They've nailed the food side too, with fresh local ingredients shining through in their seasonal menus; I've heard raves about their pies and beers, and it sounds like a proper treat for a group meal. The staff often get a big thumbs up for being so attentive and helpful, making you feel right at ease from the get-go. But let's be straight, it's not without its downsides – a few have mentioned it's a tad over the top on prices, like forking out for drinks that seem steep, and one person was disappointed with a dish that didn't live up to the hype. Still, with such a solid overall rating, I'd say it's worth popping by if you're nearby, just keep an eye on the bill and maybe book ahead to avoid any faff. All in all, it's a gem for a relaxed day out, balancing the good with the not-so-good in that honest way.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The stunning views from the top of Otley Chevin are just breathtaking – perfect for a relaxing pint while taking in the scenery.
  • They focus on fresh, locally sourced food with seasonal menus, making every meal feel hearty and authentic, especially after a good walk.
  • The cosy atmosphere with roaring fires inside and plenty of outdoor seating means it's great no matter the weather.
  • It's dog-friendly, so you can pop in with your four-legged mate for a drink in the Tap Room without any fuss.
  • The service can be spot on, with friendly staff who make you feel welcome and help with recommendations, turning a simple visit into a proper treat.
Cons
  • Prices can be a bit steep, like that pricey pint and cocktail combo that left one person stunned – it might catch you off guard.
  • Some dishes don't quite hit the mark, such as a bland mushroom pie where the flavours fell flat despite the good pastry.
  • Booking for Sundays is a hassle if you're sorting it last minute, as the system shuts down early, so you might need to call or just turn up.

weekday lunch [not accommodation]; comfortable traditional pub, menu caters for hungry hikers - good size portions - but overpriced for what it was. My 'mushroom & vegetable' pie had good pastry but very bland content and I search hard for any mushroom, found just the one slice. The fish and chips seemed a better option - lovely chips. Choice of soft drinks was quite limited. Beer was good.

Lovely place . Lovely staff. HOWEVER !!!! Very very very expensive. Pint of lager and SINGLE Tia maria and coke (post mix) cost us £13.50 . I literally went numb down one side . I POLITELY asked the lovely girl who served me " Is that price correct? " She told me the lager was £6.00 a pint ( expensive but due to the lager being rare and my ultimate favourite I accepted the price ) £7.50 for a Single Tia Maria and splash of Pepsi max is disgraceful. Works out twenty singles per bottle sold at this price is unacceptable. You are requested to pay before any drink is prepared so yes I could have refused. Unfortunately I was in shock and lost for words . To save embarrassment around other customers I said "Thank you" . Still in shock I staggered to picnic bench outside and sat down asap. I am sorry but charging £2.50 for a SPLASH OF POST MIX PEPSI is a complete rip off. Beautiful views on a sunny day if you don't collapse with seizures or heart attack that is. Shame Shame Shame. Alternative was a Can of Coca Cola was £3.50. You at least then get two servings for two drinks. A round we would have bought if this utter rip off didn't occur . I agreed with staff member who did say "We need to get a "Dash price option on tills because I agree with over charging for what you don't actually get " Great staff . Very clean but I can't imagine anyone using this pub as a regular customer.

What a wonderful warm welcome you get at the Royalty. We've taken various friends over recent years and never been disappointed. Superb home cooked food (pies to die for and you've got to try the Wharfedale Beers) We even sat out in the garden after our meal to enjoy the beautiful long distance views. Just over the road you can walk along the stunning Otley Chevin. We'll be going back soon.

Had a fab meal this evening, the Valentines menu was excellent. The 3 courses were very well presented and very tasty. Couldn't fault it at all. Atmosphere and service was great too. Thanks 😊.

Ruby was honestly the best waitress that has served us in such a long time. Her presence was so welcoming and made us feel relaxed and at ease. She recommended us food, told us the specials making our choice very easy. We enjoyed our time so much we stayed for 3 courses. We just want to say such a big thank you to Ruby for her excellent service. The food was fantastic and the views were great! I’d definitely recommend the pie to anyone going !!
