About This Pub

Ah, the Black Bull Inn – it's one of those hidden gems in Otley that really captures the essence of a proper British pub, you know? From what I've gathered from the reviews, the food stands out as a real highlight; folks are raving about the homemade dishes like beef ciabattas and roast dinners that are packed with flavour and come at a wallet-friendly price, making it perfect for a relaxed lunch or dinner with mates. The atmosphere is spot on too, with its cosy, traditional setup and a nice courtyard for when the weather's on your side, plus a good range of beers to wash it all down. On the flip side, it's not all sunshine – there were a couple of mentions about some staff not quite hitting the mark, like being a bit curt when the pub gets lively, which could put a dampener on things if you're hoping for top-notch service all round. Overall, it's a solid spot for a laid-back pint and a bite, especially if you appreciate the classics, but it's worth keeping in mind that it might not suit everyone if you're after something more polished.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food is absolutely spot on – think hearty, home-cooked traditional pub grub like roast dinners and liver & bacon that feels like a proper treat without breaking the bank.
  • It's got that classic, cosy pub vibe with traditional decor that makes you feel like you've stepped back in time, and there's a lovely courtyard out the back for a bit of fresh air and seating.
  • Some of the staff are brilliant – really welcoming and polite, going the extra mile to make you feel at home.
  • They've got a solid selection of beers and the prices are spot on for a casual outing.
Cons
  • There can be inconsistencies with the staff; one review mentioned a less than friendly bar person who seemed a bit miserable and unhelpful when things got busy.
  • It might not be the place for a super modern or flashy experience, as it's all about that straightforward, no-frills traditional feel, which could disappoint if you're after something more contemporary.

The bloke behind the bar is amazing very polite and goes out of the way for you. Woman behind the bar no people skills all. Was asked if she needed a hand as was getting busy. “No they will have to wait” was her reply. Absolutely no need to be so miserable.

Me and the wife had a beef and onion ciabatta each and it was lovely. Less than £7 each. Tender beef and nice bread. Couple of pints to wash down. Good selection of beers and a nice courtyard to the rear with plenty of seating. Will come here again in the future.

Beautiful home cooked traditional English pub food. The liver & bacon was delicious. Cozy atmosphere with little tables, in a traditionally decorated pub as if going back in time. No bells and whistles, just good basic food.
