About This Pub

Ah, The Royal Oak – it's one of those places that just feels like a proper local gem, you know? From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, the carvery is where they really shine; folks rave about the fresh, generous servings and how it's hands down one of the best they've had in ages. Chef James stands out as a real highlight – he's got that warm, welcoming manner that makes you feel right at home, even bending the rules to sort out a meal if you're a tad late. At just £11.95, it's a brilliant option for anyone after a satisfying feed without breaking the bank, and the clean, tidy dining space adds to that cosy feel. On the flip side, though, the bar staff don't always match that cheeriness; a few mentions of them being a bit downbeat or even getting the prices wrong could put a slight damper on things. Overall, I'd say it's a solid choice for a relaxed outing – the positives far outweigh the niggles, so if you're in the area, give it a go and see for yourself; you might just leave with a full belly and a smile.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The carvery here is absolutely spot on – fresh, plentiful portions, and highlights like the beef and turnips that really hit the spot.
  • Chef James is a absolute gem; he's friendly, helpful, and goes the extra mile, even serving up meals after closing time.
  • It's great value for money at around £11.95, making it an affordable treat for a proper Sunday roast or midweek meal.
  • The dining area is lovely and clean, which makes for a comfortable and welcoming atmosphere.
Cons
  • The bar staff can sometimes come across as a bit gloomy, which might dampen the vibe a little.
  • There have been instances where pricing got mixed up, like being charged the wrong amount, which is a bit frustrating.

Food was absolutely amazing, loved every bit of it. The carvery dinner was plentiful and very fresh. Highlights for me were the turnips and the beef. Carvery server was very generous with the meat and was a friendly chap. Bar staff were a little gloomy and charged us the wrong prices based on a type-o on their menu but it was refunded. Maybe they had just had a hard day? Will definitely come back again if only for the amazing food. Cheer up guys you have a lovely establishment and great food!
