About This Pub
Ah, The Royal Oak in Watford – what a gem it is for anyone after that classic pub experience with a fresh feel. From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, the food really steals the show; people are going on about the roast dinners and lamb shanks being absolute winners, all beautifully presented and packed with flavour. The team behind the bar and in the kitchen are just lovely, always ready with a smile and those thoughtful extras like surprises for the little ones or a treat for your furry mate, which makes it such a welcoming spot for families or even a quiet evening with a book and a pint. They've nailed that balance of traditional vibes with a solid beer selection and fun monthly events, so whether you're celebrating something special or just popping in for a chat, it hits the mark. On the flip side, the opening times can be a tad unreliable or shorter than you'd hope, so it's best to plan ahead to avoid disappointment. And while the prices are fair for what you get, it might stretch the budget if you're just after a cheap night out. All in all, it's a place I'd happily recommend for a proper, heartfelt pub day out – honest, it's got that warm, community feel that makes you want to come back.
Pros and Cons

-
Overall, it's got that cosy, traditional pub charm with high marks for service and vibes, backed by a solid 4.6 rating from plenty of happy visitors.
Cons
-
The operating hours can seem a bit patchy or limited in places, so it's wise to double-check before heading out, especially if you're planning a spontaneous visit.
-
With moderate prices, it might not be the most budget-friendly spot for a quick pint, though it's worth it if you're up for a proper meal.

I can’t begin to express the absolutely fantastic time I had at The Royal Oak today! I haven’t been there in many years, many years but I will now be going as often as possible. I was there this afternoon with my friends, their 4 year old son (my godson) and my dog Poppy to celebrate my birthday. We had an outdoor table under the marquee, which was perfect. Our waitress, also called Poppy, could not do enough for us. Her service went WAY above and beyond any I’ve experienced in many years. The food was excellent, especially the desserts! The atmosphere was just great, older people, families, dogs, something for everyone. I was absolutely blown away when Poppy and her manager Tom brought me out a chocolate brownie, ice cream and a candle, with “Happy Birthday” piped in white chocolate on the plate and got everyone singing happy birthday to me! It was a truly special and memorable occasion and I can’t thank them enough. I highly recommend The Royal Oak at every level and thank the team most sincerely for such a fantastic afternoon.
Amber & all the team @ the Royal Oak made our Easter Sunday truly wonderful. Roast dinners were top notch & the friendly service 1st class. They can't do enough for you & lovely touches like Easter eggs for the children, gifts & lovely Easter dog treats too. They think of all the family.
A fabulous Valentine's dinner. Lovely atmosphere. The food was of excellent quality and made to perfection. The presentation was inviting and artistic. The staff super friendly and attentive. Thank you for making our evening so special.
This was our first stop for our stay in Watford, recommended to us by our host! The food and drinks were amazing with the lamb shank and bangers and mash being a 10/10. Also the espresso martinis (not pictured) were delicious. The owner and his staff were friendly and the pub experience overall was great!
Treated my nan to abit of lunch, and popped over to the Royal Oak. Initially I thought it would be standard pub grub, but I was pleasantly surprised with their dishes. I went for the Cod and Calamari combo, and boy that dish was good. Beautifully presented, and the flavours were extraordinary. Thumbs up from me, will definitely visit again! 💯
