About This Pub

You know, I had a wander into the Load Of Hay recently, and it's just one of those pubs that makes you feel glad you stepped in. The Sunday roasts are an absolute treat – think homemade beef or even vegan options that are tasty and hearty, with everything cooked just right. It's got that warm, welcoming feel with staff who go out of their way to make sure you're looked after, and the traditional interior paired with a sunny terrace out back makes it ideal for a proper catch-up over a pint. The beers from Tring brewery are spot on, and it's all at a fair price that won't break the bank. On the flip side, I did hear a minor grumble about those silly mini prosecco bottles; it seems a few would rather they kept it simple. All in all, though, it's a cracking little spot in Watford that's worth a visit if you're after good grub, a chat, and that genuine pub charm without any fuss.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food is absolutely homemade and delicious, especially the Sunday roasts which are packed with flavour and come in generous portions.
  • The staff are so warm and welcoming, always attentive and making you feel right at home from the moment you walk in.
  • It's got that lovely traditional pub vibe with an original interior that really captures the charm of a classic British spot.
  • There's a snug sunny terrace out the back, perfect for enjoying a pint on a nice day.
  • They offer a great selection of beers, like the excellent ones from Tring brewery, and it's all at a reasonable price.
Cons
  • Some folks might find the mini bottles of prosecco a bit gimmicky and wish they'd just cap them properly instead.

Myself and my partner had a lovely roast beef dinner on Sunday, everything was homemade and really tasty. Waitresses very friendly and attentive, would highly recommend.

Lovely traditional pub with original interior and proper landlord. Snug sunny terrace out the back. Excellent Tring brewery beers. Prefer if they didn't sell silly mini bottles of prosecco - just whack a cap on it! Lovely place though

We had the best Sunday lunch here, my partner had lamb and I had the vegan roast with a vegan yorkshire! Everything was tasty and the portions were good. We would definitely recommend and will be back again when we are next in Watford. Thank you xx

In a landscape of chain pubs and identikit eateries the Load of Hay was a pleasant surprise. The Sunday roast (order your beef medium rare if you want medium) was tasty, great value, and came with a solid selection of vegetables. And £15 for a bottle of Malbec was very reasonable too. Would go again next time I’m in Watford.
