About This Pub

Ah, The Royal Oak in Oxford – what a lovely spot it is, isn't it? From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, this place really shines with its delicious home-cooked food and that cosy, historic feel of a restored 18th-century inn; it's just the ticket for a relaxed meal or a proper Sunday roast with mates. The team there seems spot on too, always up for accommodating groups and making sure everything flows nicely, even on busy nights – I've heard stories of them being super flexible with bookings and keeping the good times rolling. On the flip side, though, it's not all perfect; a couple of chats mention the service hitting average notes now and then, and while there are some veggie choices, they might not wow you if you're after a wide range. Still, with a solid 4.3 rating and all that warmth, it's a solid pick for us lot looking for a reliable pint and bite without the fuss – just remember to keep expectations realistic for a classic British pub experience.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food is absolutely delicious – think fresh, home-cooked meals and sumptuous Sunday roasts that really hit the spot.
  • The staff are incredibly friendly and responsive, especially for group events; they've got a knack for making everything run smoothly, even when it's busy.
  • It's set in a beautifully restored 18th-century inn with a warm, welcoming atmosphere that's perfect for a relaxed lunch, dinner, or just catching up over drinks.
  • They offer a diverse drinks menu and handle large gatherings brilliantly, making it a top choice for family dinners or special occasions.
Cons
  • Service can sometimes feel just average, not always living up to the hype, as a few folks have mentioned it's reliable but not extraordinary.
  • Vegetarian options are available, but they might not be as varied or extensive as you'd hope for in a place like this.
  • It's a lovely spot overall, but it doesn't quite reach those high-end expectations if you're looking for something truly Michelin-level exceptional.

We arranged a dinner party for twenty people for Saturday evening. The staff was excellent and really responsive to both email and phone calls leading up to the event and flexible in accommodating additional guests. The food orders arrived on time and were delicious. The staff came around frequently to ask for any further wishes which was appreciated!

We had a group buffet dinner for about 30 people. This is the second time we have done a dinner like this and I think the fact we have come back speaks for itself. We love the room where we were placed. The food was absolutely delicious and the staff all incredibly friendly and helpful. We love this pub.

I’ve heard that there is a Michelin one-star restaurant in Oxford. Their signature dish is a large roast chicken, but it’s only available on weekends, not on weekdays. The restaurant has a beautiful environment, though the service and taste are just average. Overall, it’s a somewhat nice-looking British restaurant. The burgers are almost the same as those at other places. The sandwiches look good and are quite large. The only surprise is the chocolate brownie, with ice cream on top and a warm egg base underneath, creating a contrast of hot and cold, though it’s a bit too sweet overall. At average £25 per person, it’s a relatively cost-effective restaurant.
