About This Pub
Oh, what a gem The Gardeners Arms is – it's one of those pubs that just pulls you in with its beautifully restored charm and that genuine, welcoming vibe you don't find everywhere these days. From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, the beer selection is spot on, with a rotating lineup of independent brews that keep things exciting, and those discounts for students and CAMRA folks make it even more of a winner for a casual pint or two. The staff truly shine; they're the heart of the place, always up for a chat and making sure everyone feels looked after, which really adds to the homely atmosphere. Plus, with board games and a telly for the match, it's perfect for a relaxed evening with mates. On the flip side, though, it's all walk-in only, so if you're popping by on a busy night, you might have to queue or squeeze in, and the food's more about simple snacks than a proper sit-down meal, which could leave you wanting if you're peckish for something heartier. All in all, it's a solid choice for anyone after that authentic pub experience in Oxford – just go with the flow and you'll have a cracking time.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The atmosphere is absolutely charming and welcoming, like stepping into a cosy corner of old Oxford that makes you feel right at home.
-
They've got a fantastic selection of independently brewed beers and ales, always fresh and with great options for CAMRA members to enjoy a discount.
-
The staff are incredibly friendly and attentive – folks like Micky and Jade really go the extra mile to make your visit memorable.
-
It's got some fun touches, like a big telly for catching the sports and a variety of board games to keep things lively.
-
Freshly prepared bar snacks and sandwiches are a nice treat, plus there's a student discount that makes it even more appealing for the uni crowd.
Cons
-
It's first-come, first-served only, so you might end up waiting if it gets busy, which can put a damper on spontaneous plans.
-
The food options are quite limited to just bar snacks and sandwiches, so if you're after a full meal, you might need to look elsewhere.
-
As a smaller pub, space can feel a bit tight during peak times, and the traditional vibe might not suit everyone looking for something more modern.

Stopped by for drinks with family during our visit to Oxford. Highly recommend, great little pub with a lovely atmosphere. Micky, the landlord, provided great service and contributes to this welcoming atmosphere. The pub has a big tv for sport and a variety of board/card games!
Worth the wait. It's been a long time coming. Since the take over its been redecorated in a beautiful style. The ales and lagers on tap are top notch. Staff always welcoming and friendly, especially Jade who made a lasting impression.
Definitely worth a visit.
Dave and Jenny keep a lovely pub. Often just the two of them, working hard to keep the regulars and visitors watered and fed. Sandwiches are wholesome, curry is better than you’d think and the beer selection (always at least two casks, including their own branded Special ale) is as long as it is wide. Highly recommended.
Extremely cozy little pub that takes time back few decades. Nice people, fine drinks and great staff. Too bad we didn't have time to eat anything because the sandwich menu looked delicious.
Throwback English pub. One of the few places where you step back in time upon entry. A time before pubs were 'gastro' and they were the hub of their community. Stopped in here for some food whilst on an overnight trip to Oxford. Great venue with plenty of pictures on the wall, including a number of local heroes and sport teams. Good selection of beers and an interesting menu (with plenty of vegetarian options)
Food wise I went for the Goan Curry which I didn't expect much from but was excellent.
