About This Pub
Oh, let me tell you about The Royal Oak – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a proper local gem in Derby, with its warm, traditional atmosphere that harks back to the good old days. I've heard from loads of folks that the food is a real highlight; whether it's the succulent lamb shank or a classic haddock and chips, everything seems to be cooked with care, and they've got options for gluten-free and vegetarian, which is brilliant if you're watching what you eat. The staff are dead friendly too, always ready with a smile and a quick word, making you feel like you're catching up with mates rather than just popping in for a pint. On the flip side, though, some have mentioned that prices can creep up a bit for what you get, and there have been a few tales of dishes not being quite up to scratch – like a steak that needed more seasoning or meals arriving late, which is a shame when you're tucking into dinner. Still, with an overall rating pushing 4.6, it's clear most people have a cracking time, and I'd say it's worth a visit for that authentic pub experience, just keep an eye on the bill and maybe go when you're not in a hurry. All in all, it's a solid spot for a bite and a bevvy, with more highs than lows if you ask me.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The food here is absolutely spot on – think hearty, well-cooked dishes like steak and ale pie or fresh salmon, with plenty of options for gluten-free or veggie folks, making it a real treat for a good meal out.
-
The staff are lovely and welcoming, always up for a chat and making you feel right at home, which adds to that cosy pub vibe.
-
It's got that classic traditional charm, with old-style decor and intimate rooms that make it stand out from the more modern spots – perfect for a relaxed evening.
-
Prices are generally fair for the quality and portions, especially when you factor in the specials like Sunday roasts, so you get good value without breaking the bank.
Cons
-
A few people have found the prices a bit steep for some dishes, like that steak that didn't quite hit the mark, which might leave you feeling it's not worth the extra quid.
-
There can be inconsistencies with food prep, such as meals not being seasoned properly or taking a while to arrive, which might spoil the experience if you're in a rush.
-
The outdoor seating area feels a tad makeshift, being part of the car park, so it might not be the most comfortable spot on a busy day or in dodgy weather.

Great food at a great price. Very old style to it but I guess that’s what makes it stand out from other pubs. Highly recommend. Friendly staff too.
Had the most exquisitely perfectly cooked piece of pork I've ever had in my life last night! The special was pork loin with roast pots, veg and a delicious sauce, my 2 friends had the surf and turf with chips, and we all had the fantastic pork terrine starter! I forgot to take a pic of my delicious creme brulée desert, with strawberries and blueberries, even better than any I had in my 4 years living in Paris! How lucky we are to have such amazing pub food here in Ockbrook... beat a path to the door of the Royal Oak, a wonderful pub with a wonderful atmosphere, cosy snugs, friendly staff and the Ockbrook Big Band in the summer there is not to be missed...
One of the best meals I've had in a while!!! Definitely worth a try!!!
Quaint pub with lots of small rooms to eat and drink inside. One of the rooms can be used for functions such as discos or weddings. There is also a seating area outside for drinking and eating but this I feel is part of the carpark. Prices for food and drinks are reasonable and food is delivered quickly. The toilets are, however, outside again near the carpark which is bad in cold wet weather. Staff are nice and friendly. The venue is worth a visit
Food very overpriced. Steak not seasoned or rested after cooking. Chips are like frozen chips purchased from a frozen food out let £15+. My kids had already finished there meals when my plate came out. See picture of my £15+ meal. I don't normally give out negative reviews but after spending £54 for 2 adult meals and 2 kids meals this place needs to raise its game or half its prices!
