About This Pub
Ah, The Royal Mortar – it's one of those classic pubs that you stumble upon in Colchester and think, 'This could be a regular spot.' From what I've gathered from the reviews, it's got that warm, inviting atmosphere where you can pop in for a lager and a chat without any fuss. The pints are decently priced, which is always a win when you're out with mates, and they've got this massive screen that's perfect for watching the footy or golf – really adds to the excitement if you're into that sort of thing. Plus, being open seven days a week until midnight means it's handy for a spontaneous evening. On the downside, though, if you're a bit of an ale enthusiast, you might find the selection a tad lacking, as one reviewer mentioned it didn't quite hit the mark for them. And it's a shame about the staff sometimes taking over the pool table; it could put a damper on things if you're hoping for a game. Still, overall, it seems like a solid choice for a laid-back night, with mostly positive vibes from folks who've been there. I'd say give it a go if you're in the area – it's got its charms, but keep expectations realistic for a true local experience.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
It's a welcoming spot for a casual lager and a good chat with mates, making it feel like a proper local hangout.
-
Pints are reasonably priced, so you won't have to worry about breaking the bank on a night out.
-
They've got a massive screen for watching sports, which is spot on if you're keen on catching the latest match.
-
Open every day from noon until midnight, giving you plenty of flexibility for impromptu meetups.
Cons
-
The beer selection is a bit limited, especially if you're after a good range of ales – might leave some feeling short-changed.
-
Staff occasionally play on the pool table themselves, which can make it tricky for others to get a game in.
-
There have been mentions of some unsavoury goings-on in the past, like drug dealers, though it seems to have settled down lately.

1982 was my last pint in there , hope it's still good,
Good place for a lager and a chat
What a great pub, thanks Ashleigh and Paul for our get together we had a lovely evening a bit hoarse this morning lol 😂 see you all soon xxx 💖
Visited for many years but first review.
Decent pub. Staff tend to play pool table meaning ordinary punters may struggle.
A decent priced pint however.
Was frequented by drug dealers but seemed normal on my visit.
I can only hope
I visited the pub in May 2021, for the first time, despite having lived in Colchester since 1980. I had the chilled IPA to drink, but as an Ale drinker I really need a range of beers, so this was not a pub for me. I was impressed with the Sky Sports golf on a massive screen with really high definition. So, this would be a good pub for a big sport event evening, such as Champions League football.
