About This Pub
Ah, the Artilleryman – it's one of those pubs that feels like a proper local hideaway in Colchester, where you can settle in for a pint and maybe catch the game on the telly. From what I've gathered from folks who've been, the drinks are an absolute highlight; that Guinness is bang on, and they've got a solid range of real ales and wines to boot. The staff really shine too, with their welcoming approach and thoughtful touches like live music events and a cracking Sunday roast – it's no wonder it's got such glowing feedback overall. It's spot on for families, with child-friendly vibes and even space for the dog, plus extras like board games and outdoor seating that make it feel inclusive and fun. But, let's be straight, it's not perfect; there are tales of the landlord being a bit sharp with younger visitors, especially students, which could make for an uncomfortable visit if you're in that boat. Still, with so many positive experiences and a strong reputation, I'd say it's worth popping in if you're after a relaxed spot – just keep in mind it might suit some more than others, and go in with that in mind for a balanced night out.
Pros and Cons

-
It's got a warm, family-run vibe with friendly staff who go above and beyond, like with their festive events and great hospitality.
-
Loads of great facilities, from outside seating and a garden to big screens for sports, plus games like pool and darts to keep things lively.
-
Child and dog-friendly, with options like free WiFi and even a traditional Sunday roast, making it a welcoming spot for all sorts of groups.
Cons
-
The landlord can come across as unwelcoming to younger crowds, particularly students, which might put some off if you're looking for a relaxed night out.
-
A few experiences suggest it might not be the most inclusive for those under 30, with reports of tense interactions that could spoil the atmosphere.

Such a lovely pub and lovely family that run the place . I recently had a quick meet santa visit with my 2 children and they went above and beyond, the decorations, costumes and great hospitality. I'd definitely be returning again good clean aswell cant fault the place . Definitely recommend 👌
Best Guinness in town, doesn’t miss.
If you’re below the age of 30, don’t bother going - Landlords horrible. Seems to hate students even when you’re spending money in his pub multiple times a week. Seen him get in a few customers’ face, for what it seems, no justifiable reason. Will NEVER return, and if this saves at least one individual from mine and my friends horrific experience, I’ll be happy!
Had a couple pints of Guinness served by Jim the landlord. Top quality and the best in Colchester by far. Also do a proper good roast
Very friendly punters and staff offering average priced beers and bar games such as pool and darts. Little courtyard out back with seating and some children's toys although I don't know if these are the owners grandkids private toys or are there for public use.
Overall quite impressed and will be back again.
