About This Pub

Ah, New Town Tavern – it's one of those cosy spots that really hits the mark for a proper pub experience in Colchester. From what I've gathered from the reviews, it's got that warm, friendly feel where you can pop in for a pint and end up chatting away with the regulars, just like catching up with old mates. The outdoor area with its vine canopy is a real gem, especially on a mild evening, and it's spot on if you're bringing your dog along or fancy a game of pool or darts while sipping on a decent selection of beers and gins. The staff seem top-notch, always making sure everyone feels welcome, and with the TVs for watching matches, it's got a bit of everything for a relaxed hangout. On the flip side, the hours look a tad messy and not always straightforward, which might leave you scratching your head if you're trying to plan around it. Plus, without a proper website, it's not the easiest to check what's on or get updates, and it feels like things have gone a bit quiet lately with no fresh reviews. All in all, if you're after a solid, unpretentious pub with heart, it's worth a visit – just keep an eye on those opening times and maybe drop by on a whim.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The friendly atmosphere makes you feel right at home from the moment you walk in, with welcoming staff and a great crowd.
  • They've got a cracking outdoor space covered by a vine canopy, perfect for a relaxed pint on a sunny day.
  • It's dog-friendly, which is brilliant if you're out with your furry mate, and they have a nice selection of wines, gins, and well-kept beers.
  • Loads of fun things to do, like playing pool, darts, or catching a match on the TVs – keeps things lively without being overwhelming.
Cons
  • The operating hours seem a bit inconsistent or unclear from what's listed, which might catch you out if you're planning a visit.
  • There's no website or online presence beyond Google, so it's tricky to get the latest info or book ahead.
  • Not many recent reviews in the last six months, which makes me wonder if it's a bit quieter these days or if folks aren't sharing their thoughts as much.

Great little local with a gem of an outdoor space covered by a vine canopy. The handpainted plant pot ashtrays are such a nice touch. This is a dog-friendly bar with a nice selection of wines, gins and beers. A pool table, dart board and TVs for those who want to watch a match or two! Staff and friendly and welcoming - great place to end a dog walk when you want to stay local
