Rose Tavern, 88 Rupert St, Norwich NR2 2AT

About This Pub

Ah, The Rose Tavern – it's one of those pubs that has real heart, you know? I've heard from mates that the Sunday roasts are an absolute treat, and the beers are reasonably priced without skimping on quality, which is always a win for a casual night out. The beer garden is a gem for soaking up the sun with friends, and the staff are dead helpful, making you feel right at home. But, and it's a big but, it's clear the place needs some love; a few folks have mentioned it's not the tidiest, with stale smells and bits that look like they've seen better days, which can really dampen the mood. There's even talk it might be closing soon, which would be a shame for such a great spot. Overall, if you're after a straightforward, traditional pub experience and don't mind overlooking the rough edges, it's worth a visit – just go in with your eyes open and maybe skip it if you're after something more polished.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The location is spot on in Norwich, making it a handy spot for a pint after a wander around.
  • They've got a solid selection of reasonably priced beers and some cracking meals, like those Sunday roasts that folks rave about.
  • The service is always friendly and quick, which makes for a welcoming vibe when you're settling in for the evening.
  • It's got a lovely beer garden that's perfect for a relaxed catch-up with mates on a nice day.
  • The traditional pub feel is just what you want sometimes – no frills, just a good old-fashioned atmosphere.
Cons
  • The place looks a bit tired and could do with a proper spruce-up; it's starting to show its age in places.
  • Some reviews mention it's not the cleanest, with stale smells and a general rundown feel that puts people off.
  • It can feel a tad empty at times, especially if you're hoping for a lively buzz, which might make it seem a bit flat.
  • There's a worry it might not be around for much longer, as a few have said it feels like it's on its last legs.
  • The food might be tasty, but if it's not up to scratch in the hygiene department, it's hard to overlook.

Looks like the place is about to shut down. Needs a boost of energy and a makeover. Wouldn't take much!? Great location.

Ok, so let's tackle the 3 star for the atmosphere first. I've been in a few times for Sunday roast, so I'm not too familiar with the pub. In general, it's been very empty when we visit, so only 3 for the atmosphere, although it's probably a lot different on other days?.. The roast here is first class. This has to be one of the best kept secrets in Norwich, and I think it's time to change that situation. I have the roast beef and my girlfriend has the veggie mushroom option. The roasts themselves are traditional and not mucked about, by boy oh boy are they good! If you're lucky enough to get cauliflower cheese as an added extra, it's definitely worth the extra pennies. You don't have to book in advance, but you can if you want to. In short, do you like a gravy dinner on a Sunday? Give this place a look.

Nice little boozer! Spent a great evening in the beer garden. Good selection of reasonably priced beer and food. The service was friendly and fast. For a relaxed evening in a very traditional pub setting, it was fab! It's not polished around the edges, but I don't necessarily want that. The loaded fries were tasty good!
