About This Pub

Ah, The Roebuck – it's one of those pubs that really sticks with you, isn't it? From what I've gathered, it's got this incredible homely feel, like you're popping into a friend's living room from another era, with intricate decorations and a roaring log fire that makes winter evenings magical. The beers and wines are top-notch and won't break the bank, and that walled garden out back is a hidden gem for sunnier days. The staff often get a big thumbs up for being welcoming and efficient, which really adds to the charm. On the flip side, though, it's a bit of a shame about the no-kids rule; I can imagine that putting off a few folks, especially after hearing about that disappointing experience someone had trying to bring their little one along. Plus, there are occasional niggles like needing to watch your change, which isn't ideal, and it might feel a touch quiet if you're in the mood for something more upbeat. All in all, if you're after a peaceful spot for a chat or some me-time with a quality pint, it's spot on – just plan ahead and know what you're getting into for a balanced visit.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The atmosphere is absolutely charming and homely, like stepping into another time – it's perfect for a cosy night or a quiet pint.
  • They've got a fantastic selection of cask beers, lagers, and wines at really affordable prices, with a standout pint of Guinness that's always spot on.
  • The staff are friendly and welcoming, making you feel right at home, and the barmaids provide great service most of the time.
  • There's a lovely walled garden out the back, ideal for when the weather's nice, and the intricate decorations and log fire add a unique, quirky touch.
  • It's a traditional pub serving solid pub food that pairs brilliantly with their drinks, without any distractions like TVs or machines.
Cons
  • They don't allow children in, which can be a real downer if you're with family, as one visit turned sour for someone trying to explain it to their kid.
  • There might be occasional slip-ups with service, like needing to keep an eye on your change, which takes a bit away from the experience.
  • The operating hours seem a tad inconsistent or limited in some listings, so it's worth double-checking before heading out.
  • It's more of a quiet, intimate spot, which might not suit those after a lively vibe with entertainment or games.

I went there with my 10-year old daughter at 2pm on a weekend and I was told we were not welcome. Dogs are allowed in the pub, but not children. How to explain the reason to my daughter? First experience of this in the UK. I do not wish them well financially.

What an incredible homely and warm pub. It’s like being transported to somewhere between another time long ago, and another dimension. Your eyes will get beautifully lost in here. Excellent selection of beers, and an excellent pint of Guinness. The lady behind the bar is a true gem!

Very intricately decorated pub in Hampton Hill, a short walk from Bushy Park. Log fire, good service from almost all of the barmaids. Watch your change obviously but otherwise very good service. Lovely garden out the back with a statue of Eddy Richardson as a greek child with grapes which was fetching. Owner lives above. Sandwiches on offer. Best priced pint in the area. Also the best selection of drinks in the area.

You won’t find many pubs like this one around. The Roebuck is the place you want to go during a cosy winter night or for a peaceful summer reading. For an intimate chat or just on your own for a some me time. It’s cosy, warm quirky and the back garden complete a real treasure that hopefully will be there still for a long time. And the sweet Linda at the bar is the perfect star of this incredibly story.

There's always an apprehension whenever you see a pub proclaiming to be a "Free House", you're not quite sure what you're walking into. You hope for a variety of independent beers, a uniqueness, not bound down by the identikit pub chains - too often are you met with call centre meeting room aesthetics and Doom Bar. I'd be lying if I didn't have a slight feeling walking up to this one that I'd be in for the same. The Roebuck is none of those things. A short walk from Fulwell station, somewhere between Twickenham and Teddington, sits this bright terracotta coloured corner pub in a sea of nothingness. 4-5 real ales on cask, a few local ones, and an array of keg beers from a couple of independent offerings to your usual accessible lagers. Cash is preferred if you're only having one, to round up the amount in a panic I ordered a sandwich - forgot the crisps - but it still only came to £7. Something to be said for the humble sandwich, a pub snack favoured by many but eroded in favour of £3 bowls of nuts or a £5 gourmet sausage roll. Once sat down you begin to actually take in the pub. The walls adorned with what at first glance seems to be clutter, but yet, it sort of flows, nothing is out of place. The wicker Harley Davidson, the tabletops with international currency under them, the Holsten Pils football, the photos of wartime London. I could go on. An Des de Moor article from 2011 summed it up perfectly about this very pub; "The best pub collections are those that are clearly stamped by a particular personality or interest. Exploring them can be a bit like reading a story — or a poem" The lady behind the bar was nice and chatty, but left me with my sandwich and solo pint enjoying the 80's tunes. Once I'd finished up, she said "come back again!", and I will, I can't wait. I want to sit in another space staring at another section of the wall with another sandwich and a fresh pint of ale. Life is good when pubs like this exist. Nothing else matters.
