About This Pub

Oh, let me tell you about The Rockcliffe Arms; it's one of those pubs that just feels like a warm hug when you walk in, especially if you're after that genuine, no-fuss British boozer experience. From what I've gathered from the chats online, folks absolutely rave about the atmosphere – it's got this charming, old-school interior with trophies and photos dotted around, making it perfect for sinking into a comfy corner with a pint. The beers are spot on, well-kept and affordable, which is always a win for a casual night out, and it's brilliant for catching sports on the telly with several screens keeping things lively. The staff and regulars come across as genuinely friendly, turning a quick drink into a proper social occasion. On the flip side, it's pretty straightforward with just one bar and not a lot mentioned about food – someone noted the homemade jams, but if you're hoping for a hearty pub grub menu, you might be disappointed. It can also be a tad quiet during the week, which is lovely for a peaceful chat but not ideal if you're in the mood for a bustling crowd. All in all, it's a solid choice for anyone wanting a relaxed, affordable pint in Whitley Bay, as long as you go in with the right expectations for a traditional setup.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • It's got that authentic, traditional pub vibe that makes you feel right at home, with a cosy setup and plenty of old trophies and photos to admire.
  • The beers are well-kept and reasonably priced, making it a brilliant spot for a casual pint without breaking the bank.
  • Friendly staff and welcoming locals create a great atmosphere, especially if you're popping in for a chat or to catch some Sky Sports on the screens.
  • They've got unique touches like homemade jams available – just remember to book them in advance for a lovely little extra.
Cons
  • It might feel a bit basic with just the one bar and not much in the way of food options, so if you're after a full meal, you could be out of luck.
  • Things can be quiet at off-peak times, like a Monday evening, which is fine for a peaceful drink but might not suit if you're after a lively buzz.
  • Without a website or much online presence, it's tricky to check details ahead of time, so you might end up winging it when you visit.

Came here 16/06/25, 7pm. As others have said, this is a 'proper' boozer with one bar and two 'almost' separate rooms. There are several screens showing sky sports etc. Great atmosphere, well kept beers and also homemade jams available (book these in advance). Didn't try any food but the beers are well kept & there's a good selection of drinks at the bar. We always pop in for a couple before going for a curry at Shukran or Whitley Tandoori, when we're in Whitley Bay. See you next time !

Today was the first time we visited the Rockcliffe Arms. A friend had described it to us as one of the last 'real' pubs in the area. Couldn't have been more right. What a great pub. Great beer, surroundings, atmosphere, and lovely staff. Will definitely make this a regular haunt.

Lovely traditional pub and the perfect place to watch the football. Incredible prices on drinks and really nice atmosphere with friendly staff and plenty of seats. The interior is very cool with plenty of old trophies and photos to have a look at.

I found the Rockcliffe by chance on a monday night (not Whitley Bay's liveliest time). It was like stepping through a time warp. Lovely old style pub. Friendly barstaff and a nice atmosphere... and decent prices. A reasonable selection of beer, from the more general lagers like Carling to real ale and local brews.
