About This Pub
Ah, The Red Lion – it's one of those classic pubs that just feels like a second home, tucked away in Thorpe Hesley with that inviting, down-to-earth charm. From what I've gathered from folks' chats online, it's spot on for a relaxed evening; the real ales are top-notch and reasonably priced, and it's brilliant if you're into a bit of live music or a quiz to liven things up. The staff really make the place, always up for a chat and keeping the atmosphere friendly, plus it's ace for dog owners looking for a welcoming spot. On the flip side, it can get a tad heaving inside, so you might struggle for a seat on peak times, and while the bar snacks hit the spot for a quick bite, it's not the place for a hearty meal. Overall, it's a solid choice for a pint and a laugh with mates, but keep in mind those little niggles if you're planning a bigger gathering – still, I'd say it's worth a visit for the good vibes alone.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The atmosphere is lovely and welcoming, with friendly locals that make you feel right at home as soon as you walk in.
-
They've got a cracking selection of real ales and beers, perfect for anyone who appreciates a good pint without breaking the bank.
-
It's super dog-friendly, so you can pop in with your furry mate and enjoy a drink together.
-
There's live music on Saturdays and a midweek quiz, which adds a fun buzz and gives you something to look forward to during the week.
-
The staff are brilliant – always friendly and helpful, with the landlord making sure everything runs smoothly.
-
Prices are spot on for a local spot, and the beer garden is a nice touch for when the weather's playing ball.
Cons
-
It can get a bit packed inside, making it tricky to snag a seat, especially on busier nights.
-
No proper food on offer, just bar snacks, so if you're after a full meal, you might need to head elsewhere.
-
Some events like the quiz have had a few hitches, which could put a dampener on things if you're relying on them for a good night.

Friendly locals pub with good quality real ales
A great dog friendly local pub. Good Selection of beers and lagers live music on a Saturday night and a midweek quiz.
Lovely pub. Great lLandlord, fantastic prices...lovely atmosphere.
Great Pub, Great Staff and good selection of drinks... So why a 2 Star Review? It's for the quiz experience on Thursday night (13/03) to be precise.
Went to join ithe daughter and her mates with the quiz, as well as meeting up with an old friend and to watch some football on the TV
Anyhow as the night went on, it appeared we were doing well in the quiz. A mixture of youth and two 40+ blokes answering majority of questions... Not a mobile phone in sight (check your CCTV) :-)
So as I finished the quiz and was having a chat with my mate, my daughter was told they'd won the quiz - but as they were cheating 'because no one should have got all/certain answers correct'
As Kieran (not sure if he was the owner or a glorified regular) was doing his rounds with the other players, he was happily informing everyone that the winners had been cheating.. shame, if you have questions you expect no one to answer, then that is wrong (unfortunately the 2 old farts knew the answers)
Shame Kieran had to be rude to my daughter and her friends. They received the drinks vouchers - but out of principle, they handed the vouchers back - as they weren't happy being accused (pubs are meant to be encouraging customers in, not making them not want to go in)
So, last night was the first and last time I'll be in the pub (so I won't be missed). Might try the Tiger another night...
So, hats off to Kieran - cracking job. You soured what was a good night and a nice catch up with people
Enjoy the drinks tokens you saved
Good local pub. Friendly staff, reasonable prices and an okay selection of drinks, including a few ales on the pump. There is no food but they have bar snacks. There isn't much seating inside and it's always busy so it can be hard to get a spot occasionally, but it does have a decent beer garden so it's less of an issue on a nice day. There's always sport on the TV and a pool table so there is always a good atmosphere and it is our go to pub in the area.
