About This Pub
Ah, The Red Alligator – what a gem of a place down in Bishop Auckland. I've got to say, it's one of those spots that really hits the mark for a relaxed evening out. The food is where it shines brightest; whether you're tucking into a hearty Sunday carvery or grabbing a steak night deal, everything comes out piping hot and full of flavour, and at such reasonable prices too. The team behind the bar are an absolute delight, always cheerful and ready to sort out any requests, like whipping up a takeaway in a flash or making a fuss over a birthday – it just adds that extra warmth to the whole experience. On the flip side, it's worth noting that they do get busy, so you might find yourself needing to book ahead for peak times, and every now and then, a small detail like the texture of a side veg might not quite hit the spot for some. Overall, though, it's a solid choice if you're after good honest pub fare without the fuss, and I'd definitely recommend giving it a go for a proper feel-good night out.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The food is absolutely spot on – from steak nights to Sunday carveries, it's all cooked to perfection and offers brilliant value for money.
-
Staff are incredibly friendly and helpful; they're always willing to go the extra mile, like packing up desserts or singing happy birthday.
-
It's a welcoming spot that's been transformed under new owners, with a much-improved atmosphere that makes you feel right at home.
-
Takeaway options are spot on for when you're in a rush, and the portions are generous without breaking the bank.
Cons
-
Occasionally, little things might not be quite to everyone's taste, like the turnip in some dishes needing a bit more blending – but that's just a minor personal preference.
-
It can get fully booked on popular nights, so you might need to plan ahead to snag a table, especially for events like steak night.

I got a takeaway because I didn't have time to sit in before work and omg deans dinners are actually better than I remember them. Only tiny complaint is the turnip needs blitzing a little more but that's personal preference and you can please everyone. Everything else was cooked perfectly
Food was delicious, we had the Sunday Carvery. My little girl wasn't well so we requested desserts to take home & they packed them for us without a problem. The staff are very friendly and helpful & nothing is to much trouble. I would highly recommend.
What can I say! Wow! Came by chance on a Wednesday apprehensive in remembering how poor service I had received previously, but really glad to find out that new owners have transformed the atmosphere and menu.
Steak night is amazing value at £24 for 2 steaks and a drink! Food was well presented, high quality beef and very well cooked and prepared.
Will definitely be back to try the fantastic looking burgers and parmos!
Thanks
Very nice food for a good price. Very nice and friendly staff. Went here for a meal for my daughter's birthday. We brought a cake ourselves just in case. Was no problem for them. They brought the cake out and sang happy birthday for my daughter.
We arrived at 5.30pm today (Tues) to be told they were fully booked - it was Steak night! Then said if we could be out by 7pm they could fit us in - so glad they did. Service, food (Steak & Ale pie) were exceptional. The young staff were excellent. Definitely will be back, though will book to ensure a table.
