About This Pub

Ah, The Grand Hotel, what a gem it is in Bishop Auckland – I've got to say, it's one of those places that really captures the heart of a traditional pub experience. From what I've gathered from the reviews, the staff go above and beyond to make you feel welcome, and the live music scene is brilliant; think Friday open mics full of talent and Saturday bands that get everyone up and dancing, all without charging an arm and a leg for entry or drinks. It's affordable, community-oriented, and seems like a fantastic spot for everything from a quick pint to hosting a special event. On the flip side, though, it's not without its rough edges – the venue could use a bit of TLC to make it more inviting, and the lack of clear opening times might leave you hanging if you're trying to pop in spontaneously. Overall, it's got that authentic, down-to-earth charm that makes it worth a visit, especially if you're after a lively atmosphere without the pretence, but do keep in mind it might not be the swankiest spot in town. If you're a fan of proper pubs with a bit of soul, I'd give it a go – just check ahead to avoid any surprises!

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming, making you feel right at home as soon as you walk in.
  • They've got a cracking lineup of live music, with open mic nights every Friday and bands on Saturdays – always a great laugh and no entry fee to boot.
  • Prices are spot on, really affordable for drinks and events, so you can enjoy a night out without breaking the bank.
  • It's a proper community spot, perfect for a casual get-together or even something more special like a celebration – the atmosphere is warm and lively.
Cons
  • The venue itself isn't the most polished; it could do with a bit of sprucing up to make it more comfortable for everyone.
  • With no clear operating hours listed, it's a bit of a faff trying to plan a visit, and I've heard it might not always be open when you'd expect.
  • Based on one review, the space doesn't quite live up to the bands they host, so it might not be ideal if you're after a top-notch setup.

There are live bands every Saturday night with no admission fee. Drinks are reasonable, staff are very friendly, what more to ask for on a local night out.
