About This Pub

Ah, let me tell you about The Rattler – it's this quirky little gem in South Shields, all decked out in old train carriages that used to chug along the coast, now transformed into a cosy restaurant and bar. I love how they've kept that historical charm alive, making it feel like you're stepping back in time while enjoying the sea breeze. The food's where it really shines; their carvery feasts are spot on, with juicy roasts and those crispy roasties that just hit the spot, plus they've got family-friendly options that cater to everyone, big or small. And the staff? They're proper friendly, always up for a chat, and it's brilliant that they let dogs join in – perfect for us who like to bring the pooch along. On the flip side, though, I've heard a few tales of long waits for the grub, which can be frustrating if you're starving after a day out, and sometimes the dishes arrive a tad cool, taking away from that fresh-from-the-kitchen feel. There's also that odd mix-up with the name on maps, which might have you scratching your head at first. All in all, it's a solid choice for a casual get-together, but it'd be even better with a bit more consistency in the service – I'd say give it a go and see for yourself, as it's got that warm, community feel that makes you want to come back when things are running smoothly.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The unique train-themed setting is absolutely charming – it's like dining in history, with the old carriages turned into a cosy spot right on the beach front, which adds a lovely touch to the atmosphere.
  • The food is a real highlight, especially the carvery with its tasty roast meats, delicious roasties, and fresh veggies – it's often compared favourably to the likes of Toby Carvery, and they've got great family bundles to suit all tastes.
  • Staff are genuinely friendly and helpful, making you feel right at home, and it's a bonus that they welcome dogs, so you can bring your furry friends along for the ride.
  • Pricing is spot on for the area, offering good value without breaking the bank, and the location in South Shields makes it perfect for a relaxed day out.
Cons
  • Waiting times for food can be a bit of a drag, with some folks mentioning waits of nearly an hour, which puts a damper on the experience if you're with a group.
  • The food doesn't always arrive piping hot, like in one case where the carvery was tasty but had gone cold, which is a shame when you're looking forward to a hearty meal.
  • There's a bit of confusion with the name – it's also referred to as Platform 33 on some maps, which might throw you off if you're trying to find the place.
  • Experiences can vary, with a few reports of service hiccups that leave you wishing for a smoother visit overall.

We visited for the first time on Sunday. We did pre book a table just incase. The Sunday lunch is the same as the Toby Carvery layout. The veg was really nice and the roasties were definitely far tastier than the Toby Carvery, which are awful. There was plenty of choice of veg and had 3 lovely meats to pick from. Definitely recommend.

Decided to try this place as family together there was 5 of us. Staff very friendly but unfortunately waiting time for food was pretty bad waited nearly and hour for our 3 sons to get meal for then to be told ours would be a few more minutes .15 minutes later we got ours but lads were finished.Whole point was to go out for meal together it was ridiculous so while we ate ours lads had to sit and wait for us. On a high note food was delicious just a shame our food didn't arrive together

I’ve been a few times for carvery which has always been lovely and today I ordered the fish finger butty which was delightful! Pricing is in line with most other pub/restaurants in the area.

This is also called The Rattler on maps but is called Platrorm33 with its previous name. We were visiting the area and needed to find somewhere to eat. We had not eaten there before, so we thought it looked interesting, so we gave it a try. We will not be returning. We ordered for three people, 2 adults and one child. This cost almost £45. Myself and grandson only had soft drinks. I will try to give structured feedback, but I feel I should point out some issues that could be rectified to help make it a better place to visit. The first booth we tried was opposite the bar. It was covered in spilt drink stains, which could be cleaned with a steamer or even a samp cloth and soap. It looked awful, so we moved to another that was clean. My daughter (adult) ordered at the bar, and the staff were lovely with her. They had a laugh and a joke and made her feel welcome. We had our drinks and waited for our food. It wasn't too busy, and some people who came in 20 mins after us got their food before us. After this, my daughter asked about our order. They said we were next on the grill, but other orders still came out before ours. In total, we waited about an hour for our food. We ordered a double bacon cheeseburger, pulled pork wrap and chicken strips with dips. My grandson liked his chicken strips. He chose this as he didn't like the children's options. My daughter gave him some of her chips to share as this doesn't come with it. I had the wrap, which came with chips. The chips were OK, just a bit cold. The wrap, I could not finish. It was mostly sauce with a mushy texture. It would have been nicer if it had more of a pulled pork texture as it felt like eating baby food. You barely had to chew. My daughter could not eat her burger at all. The bacon was with very thick, uncooked fat, which was chewy. The bottom of the bun was soggy and dropped to bits. She took two bites and just couldn't eat it. She said it was of such poor quality meat with an unusual taste and texture. She fe lt it was lesser quality than a roadside burger van. With this being £11.95 you'd expect much better quality, this is a price you'd pay in an inner city bar and is far lesser the quality. I've added pictures of this to show how awful it was. Before leaving, I popped to the bathroom, There were no working locks on the two toilets that were available and no toilet paper. Luckily, I always carry tissues in my bag. The doors to enter the toilet you have to stand in the middle and hold both doors at the same time. Otherwise, you'll get trapped in between the doors. It could also benefit from a deep clean. I will say again, the staff were nice and the best bit about visiting but the place needs some cleaning and repairs and the food is terrible
