About This Pub
Ah, The Anchor Inn – it's one of those unpretentious spots in Chelmsford that just feels like a proper local haunt, you know? From what I've gathered from folks' experiences, it's got this warm, lively atmosphere where you can kick back with a pint, catch some live music or sport on the telly, and even have a go at darts or pool. The staff come across as genuinely smiley and attentive, which really makes the place shine, and the drinks won't break the bank, especially if you're after something straightforward. That wood-burning fire is a lovely touch for those colder nights, and the outside seating gives you a bit of option for when the weather's on your side. But, let's be honest, it's not all roses – there was that one story about the landlord being a bit brusque and turning people away when it got busy, which sounds a right shame and could spoil an evening if you're not lucky. Overall, though, with a solid rating backing it up, I'd say it's worth popping in for a relaxed catch-up with mates, just keep in mind it might not be the poshest spot in town, and maybe plan ahead for busier times to avoid any dramas.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The staff are really friendly and create a welcoming atmosphere, making you feel right at home as soon as you walk in.
-
It's a proper traditional pub with great features like darts, pool, and big TVs for watching sports – perfect for a casual night out.
-
Drinks are reasonably priced, and there's a cosy wood-burning fire that adds a nice warm touch on chillier evenings.
-
They've got outside seating areas, which are great for enjoying a pint in the fresh air or people-watching on Moulsham Street.
Cons
-
There have been a few reports of less than polite behaviour from the landlord in certain situations, which can put a dampener on things.
-
It might get a bit crowded at times, leading to entry issues that could leave you feeling a tad frustrated if you're not quick off the mark.
-
The overall vibe is solid, but it's not the most scenic spot, with some areas backing onto a car park, which isn't exactly charming.

A good old Essex pub, with TV sports, darts and pool, if you get cold, there's a wood burning fire🔥
Went there for new year to watch a family friend DJ, I was met by a Peter stringfellow wanna be who claimed he was the landlord and refused us entry claiming it was full to capacity.
This male was not polite and virtually pushed me of the step by puffing up his chest and putting his hand up.
I get it if it was full to capacity, however we were sat down the road and he let others in, so obviously he was showing off to other outside by bullying four females.
Would never return.
Very good atmosphere. It was great hearing live music again. Drinks were reasonably priced and the staff were fun and attentive. Overall great.
Nice pub, friendly staff and regulars.
Good sized TV's for watching sport, nice little space at front set behind railings with outside seating.
Traditional unpretentious boozer with lovely landlady and happy smiley staff. Quite large and has a few benches out the back in the none too scenic car park and some tables out front for people watching.
Pool table, shows the footy and has a pretty good jukebox fed by the mainly convivial locals who have a good slightly alternative taste in music.
