About This Pub

Ah, The Pulteney Arms – it's one of those pubs that really captures the heart of Bath, tucked away just off the main drag, making you feel like you've stumbled upon a local secret. From what I've gathered, it's brilliant for sinking into a well-poured pint of real ale; they're in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide, after all, with options like Timothy Taylor and guest brews that keep things fresh and exciting. The food doesn't disappoint either – think classic pub dishes with a homely twist, like a cracking Sunday roast or that chicken pie everyone's raving about, all served up in a dog-friendly space that adds to the relaxed feel. Summer evenings in the courtyard or on the terrace are just lovely for a chat and a drink, and the Wednesday quiz nights bring a bit of community spirit with affordable fun and prizes on offer. But, let's be straight, it's not all perfect; a few folks have mentioned the service can be off sometimes, with some staff seeming a bit moody or unenthusiastic, which is a shame when the rest is so good. Still, with an overall rating hovering around 4.5, it's clear most people leave with a smile, so if you're heading to Bath, I'd say give it a go – just maybe avoid it on a Monday or Tuesday when it's shut, and hope for the best on the service front.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The beer selection is top-notch, with a great variety of real ales like Timothy Taylor and guest options, making it a real treat for ale enthusiasts.
  • The food is spot on, especially the pub classics and Sunday roasts – think homemade chips and tasty chicken pie that hit the spot after a long day.
  • It's got a warm, welcoming vibe with dog-friendly spaces, an enclosed courtyard for summer drinks, and a front terrace for people-watching.
  • Quiz nights on Wednesdays add a fun element, with teams of up to six for just £2 a head, and there's a payout for winners – perfect for a midweek get-together.
  • The staff can be lovely when they're on form, creating that proper pub atmosphere where you feel right at home.
Cons
  • Service can be hit or miss; some staff come across as sullen or rude, which puts a dampener on the experience based on a few visits.
  • It's closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, so if you're planning a midweek trip to Bath, you might have to look elsewhere.
  • The menu is on the short side, sticking to the basics without much variety, which might not excite everyone looking for something more adventurous.

I'm not local to Bath, so my visit was driven by recommendations elsewhere and it being a Bath supporters haunt. Suffice to say, it's a great local pub tucked just off main streets, but you get a friendly welcome, nice surroundings and spaces to take a seat, and a good variety of beers on tap. Being a match day it was busy by 1.30ish with a great atmosphere. The bar staff are very efficient and aware of those waiting for service, it's nice to go somewhere and not feel like you're just a walking pound sign, your custom is appreciated. Needless to say, next time I visit I'll certainly be popping in again.

Excellent food, beer and service for a family meal on a Good Friday evening. We booked a table with an hour's notice and we're given a fab spot. Bar staff were great, food was tremendous and we even enjoyed a game of Scrabble. Proper pub, friendly vibe, a real find on our visit to Bath and I'd recommend to anyone after proper food and proper beer in a welcoming environment...bravo :)

This is a fabulous pub but, apart from the youngest member of staff, the service is dreadful. The staff are sullen, moody and down right rude. We’ve been in on several occasions this week and one senior member of staff is definitely in the wrong job. I’ve actually never experienced such a bad attitude from a person in her position ( all of us felt the same way) she would rather stand and eat her tortilla wrap than serve you and she clearly expected the very capable, very junior member of staff to do everything while she stood about eating or on her phone.

Best proper pub food i've had for ages, with great homemade chips. Lovely staff too! Beer also tastes great...like, well-kept and fresh which sounds weird but you don't actually get that everywhere.

Nice friendly local pub with a good atmosphere. Menu is short but it's got all the normal pub classics. I had the chicken pie and it was brilliant, very tasty. It's a pub for dog lovers. Good selection of beers.
