About This Pub

Ah, The Boater – it's one of those Bath gems that really pulls you in with its prime riverside setting, where you can kick back in the huge beer garden and soak up those postcard-worthy views of the bridge and weir. I've heard from folks who've popped in for a quick beer that it's just the ticket for unwinding, with a solid lineup of cask ales and craft beers to choose from, alongside hearty pub grub and pizzas that hit the spot after a wander around town. The staff are often lovely, chipping in to make sure you're settled, especially if you're there to catch a match or celebrate with a group – it's got that flexible feel for everything from casual meet-ups to bigger dos like weddings. But, let's be straight, it's not all smooth sailing; there have been a few grumbles about the odd member of staff who doesn't quite bring the energy, which can take the edge off an otherwise fab evening. Still, with its mix of cosy spots and that unbeatable location, it's well worth a visit if you're after a proper pub experience – just keep an eye out for busier times and maybe book ahead to make the most of it.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • Stunning location right by the river, with a massive beer garden offering spectacular views of Pulteney Bridge and the weir – perfect for a sunny afternoon.
  • Friendly and attentive staff who often go the extra mile, like checking in to make sure you're comfortable or helping with bookings for events and sports viewing.
  • A great mix of spaces inside and out, from traditional pub vibes upstairs to cosy nooks and stylish dining areas, giving you options depending on your mood.
  • Tasty food and drink selection, including refined pub classics made with fresh, seasonal ingredients and even a pizza van for something more casual.
  • Versatile for different occasions, whether it's a family gathering, watching live sports, or hosting private events like meetings or weddings.
Cons
  • Service can be inconsistent at times, with some staff seeming a bit disinterested, which might dampen the atmosphere on an otherwise promising visit.
  • There might be gaps between what's promised on the website and the actual experience, like expectations around family-friendly options not always holding up.
  • It can feel a tad overcrowded during peak times, so you might need to plan ahead to avoid disappointment.

Lovely pub. Popped in for a cheeky beer. Big terrace downstairs that sort of overlooks the bridge and weir. Very pleased to have stopped here.

Overall I'd describe this as snatching defeat from the jaws of victory - could have been great but was very disappointing: nice general decor/vibe but the barman clearly didn't want to be there and although not rude sucked the atmosphere out of the place; it says on the website there's a kids menu but there wasn't; food was good but took 45-50 mins to arrive (including the separate order of a single dish we put through first for kids to share which took c. 40 mins to come!); and there was water all over the floor of the toilet. Good TVs for watching sport and maybe that's the reason to go, but I wouldn't go back.

Maybe a bit of an unpopular opinion as a Bath resident, but I really like the Boater. The staff are always lovely, the location is unparalleled and the pub itself has three 'modes', trad pub upstairs, clubby nook midlevel, and a really brilliant refurbishment of the outside area by the weir. Marlon runs a tight operation and the beer, food and service are very good. Prices are not cheap, but neither is running a business like this. Recommend for visitors and Bath residents (to rediscover).

Fabulous pub! The manager couldn't have been more helpful. All the staff were brilliant. We wanted to watch the West Ham game & had booked a table to be sure. We arrived early & were given a choice of places to sit. He checked on us throughout the evening, making sure it was warm enough (the basement was a bit chilly, but the heaters were great). The food was good - buffalo wings, cheeseburger & fish finger sarnie. The only disappointment was the footy score 😬

We visited here twice on our recent trip from York. We ventured in before a planned river cruise trip so very much accidentally but very very pleased we did! A lovely and warm welcome from the staff. A lovely atmosphere. We are a family of four. Lots of choice of drinks and on our second visit we stayed for food. Delicious. Again great service from a lovely lady on the bar today. Just what we needed before our long journey home. Definitely recommend. Thank you all involved! We will be back!! Fully appreciated the warm welcome and prompt and smiley service! 🙏🙏
