About This Pub
Oh, let me tell you about The Prince of Wales – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a breath of fresh air, tucked away in the heart of the Essex countryside. From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, the food is where they really shine; they're farmers themselves, so you're getting proper, hearty dishes made with their own beef and lamb, all locally sourced and cooked fresh by their new chef. It's not fancy-schmancy stuff, but that's the beauty of it – think homemade sausages or a cracking Sunday lunch that leaves you feeling satisfied. The staff are an absolute delight, always up for a chat and making sure everyone feels right at home, which adds such a nice, personal touch. Plus, with live bands and a smashing outdoor area, the atmosphere can be lively without being overwhelming, ideal for a family outing or just catching up with friends over a pint of traditional ale or some local wine. On the flip side, though, be prepared for a possible wait on the food since it's all made to order, and it's a bit of a faff that they don't list their hours clearly, so you might end up turning up when they're not open. All in all, it's a solid spot for a relaxed day out, and I'd say it's well worth a visit if you're in the area – just go with the flow and you'll have a brilliant time.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The food is absolutely top-notch, with fresh, locally sourced ingredients straight from their own farm – think hearty pub classics that taste like they've been made with real care.
-
The staff are so friendly and welcoming; it's like popping into a mate's house for a chat, with that personal touch from the family who run the place.
-
There's a brilliant atmosphere, especially with live music and a lovely outdoor area, making it perfect for a relaxed afternoon or evening out.
-
They've got some cracking accommodation options too, with newly refurbished rooms that offer a cosy countryside retreat if you're staying over.
-
It's a proper traditional pub at heart, serving up a great selection of local ales, wines, and more, all in the beautiful Essex countryside.
Cons
-
There might be a bit of a wait for food sometimes, as everything's freshly cooked, which can be a downside if you're in a rush.
-
The operating hours aren't clearly specified, so it could be tricky to plan a visit without double-checking first, just to avoid any disappointment.

Very helpful bar manager Toby. Nice pub. Nice outside area too. Can't say anything about the rooms because we didn't require a room. We were on a circular walk around Stow Maries which started and ended at the PofW. We had a bite to eat, and I would definitely recommend the homemade sausage roll with pickle on the side. We'll be back!! X
Visited today for the first time in 20 years. We had an amazing lunch, lots of variety. Was warned there was a bit of a wait for food, but we thought it arrived in really good time for such freshly cooked meals. Excellent quality, and brilliant staff. George was friendly and welcoming. The ladies behind the bar were also very friendly, I look forward to coming back x
Absolutely loved my visit to this pub! The fish and chips were some of the best I’ve had in ages. To top it off, there was a live band playing that night and they were fantastic which really added to the atmosphere. The whole place had such a warm, welcoming vibe. The staff were lovely too, friendly, attentive, and made us feel right at home. Can’t wait to come back!
This is our second time visiting for food and drinks as a family. The food is second to none, all freshly prepared & locally sourced. After our lunch we enjoyed the live band outside with a few drinks & the atmosphere was excellent! The new owners are such a lovely, welcoming family & we wish them all the best for the future.
What a gem! We had the most delicious family Sunday lunch is the newly done up orangery - what a nice space. The food was absolutely delicious - with really good quality local meat, yummy cauliflower cheese and proper gravy. The new owners also gave us a peak at the rooms too which looks really nice - good to know for when we have extended family staying in the area. The pub itself is so cosy and authentic too with fire roaring and lots of interesting old photos and features… All in all I would highly recommend!
