About This Pub

You know, I have to say, The Plough in Hemel Hempstead is one of those places that just feels like a proper British pub should – warm, welcoming, and full of character. From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, the Sunday roasts are spot on, with that carvery style letting you pile your plate high with tender meats and all the trimmings, all made from fresh, locally sourced ingredients that give everything a real homemade feel. It's brilliant for family lunches or marking special occasions, with staff who go out of their way to make you feel at home, like they're old mates chatting away. The outdoor areas are a lovely touch too, ideal for a sunny day pint or a relaxed meal al fresco. On the flip side, it does get heaving at peak times, so you might end up queuing or squeezed in, and if you're not in the mood for classics like fish and chips or burgers, the menu might not offer much variety to shake things up. Still, it's a solid choice for anyone after a no-fuss, enjoyable pub experience that leaves you with a smile – I'd definitely pop in again for another go at that carvery!

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The Sunday roasts and carvery are an absolute treat, with fresh, locally sourced ingredients that make every bite feel hearty and authentic.
  • The staff are wonderfully friendly and attentive, always going the extra mile to make your visit special, whether it's for a birthday or a casual get-together.
  • It's a fantastic spot for groups and celebrations, with a warm, inviting atmosphere and lovely outdoor spaces that are perfect for enjoying a sunny afternoon.
  • They've got a great selection of British pub classics on the menu, all made from scratch, which really hits the spot for a comforting meal.
Cons
  • It can get pretty busy, especially on weekends, which might mean a wait for a table or a bit of a crowd inside.
  • The menu focuses mainly on traditional British dishes, so if you're in the mood for something more adventurous, options might feel a tad limited.
  • With moderate prices, it could add up if you're planning a big meal or drinks for a group, though it's fair value for what you get.

Huge thank you to Victor for making our birthday lunch so special today!! We had a range of ages at the table from age 3 to age 93, and Victor was so sweet and lovely in all the right ways to every single guest. He made our birthday girl feel very special, and for that we’re incredibly grateful! Food was fantastic and would highly recommend the Halloumi salad. Lots of parking available and good veggie options. Thank you again!

Visited for lunch today with my son. We were seated and served by an older lady (grandparent age) but I'm afraid I don't know what her name was. She was absolutely lovely from start to finish and she was working so hard with serving, check backs and clearing the whole time we were there. She is an asset to your pub! On top of the great service, the food was lovely as was the setting.

Amazing afternoon spent celebrating my Mum's Birthday, they accommodated all 14 of us with a lovely long table. There is something for everyone here, the carvery was amazing and those of us who ate from the main menu were all very pleased too. Our waiter was good fun (I wish I'd taken his name). We spent around 4 hours there and weren't rushed at all. This is one of my favourite places, so being able to bring all the family and they love it as much as me was very special. Thank you Team xx

A good spot for lunch - just minutes from the M1 - when driving north. We were initially surprised by how many cars there were in the car park, but the pub turned out to be very busy, even at 1pm on a Saturday. A good menu of British pub classics, inc roast pork belly, and fish & chips, and good puddings too. Clearly very popular with the local community!
