About This Pub

Ah, The Plough – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a proper community hub in Macclesfield, you know? From what I've gathered from the reviews, it's got that warm, down-to-earth atmosphere where you can settle in for a pint and chat away the evening. The drinks are a real highlight; people love the ciders and ales, and it's clear they've put effort into keeping things fresh and local. Plus, when they've got their Sunday lunch on, it's meant to be brilliant – think locally sourced ingredients that make for a proper hearty meal. But, and there's always a but, it's not all smooth sailing. Some folks have mentioned that food isn't always available, which is a shame if you're hoping for a bite after your walk. Then there's the pricing on alcohol-free options, which seems a tad steep and might make you hesitate if you're driving or going tee-total. And if take-away's your thing, well, a few reviews suggest it could do with some improvement – raw veg and tough turkey aren't exactly winning anyone over. All in all, it's a solid choice for a casual night out, especially if you're after good company and a decent drink, but I'd say plan ahead and maybe stick to the on-site grub if you can. It's got that 3.9 rating for a reason – plenty to enjoy, with just a few niggles to navigate.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The Plough has a really welcoming local atmosphere that makes you feel right at home, perfect for a relaxed catch-up with mates.
  • They've got a solid selection of pints and ciders that hit the spot, with some lovely cask ales that folks have raved about.
  • It's sparkling clean and has been nicely revamped, making it a fresh and inviting spot to pop into.
  • When the food's on offer, like their Sunday lunch menu, it's absolutely spot on – locally sourced and delicious, with highlights like melt-in-the-mouth beef.
Cons
  • Food availability can be a bit unreliable, especially on Sundays when it might not be an option at all.
  • Some drinks, like alcohol-free Guinness, feel overpriced compared to other places, which could put a dampener on things.
  • Take-away food has had some rough reviews, with complaints about tough meats and undercooked veg – not ideal if you're after a quick bite.
  • It can fill up quickly for meals, so you'll need to book ahead, which might not suit spontaneous plans.

This was a great little Pub we happened upon during our visit to Macclesfield. Stopped in for a few drinks before continuing our walk about. Even returned again after our walk. Very local atmosphere. Good pints and ciders. It was a Sunday but unfortunately no food available. Locals very welcoming.

It’s a nice pub with good service but please, if you’re going to charge £4.50 for a can of Guinness 0.0, can it be a pint one like most other places? It’s £3.50 for a pint can in the Shamrock Bar for example — alcohol free drinks should be under £4 in general imo, or it puts people off

Heard the pub had reopened, thought we'd call in and give it a try, cask ale was lovely. Nice to see the pub sparkling clean again much better than the last time we called in. Will definitely visit again soon

Don't even bother ordering take away food it's abysmall. We ordered a turkey and a beef roast dinner the beef was one slab of beef the turkey was like rocks the veg was rock hard and raw I don't even know what the Yorkshire puddings were and to top it of the "pig in blanket" was one sausage split between the 2 "meals" and no bacon atall there was no stuffing or cauliflower cheese and like one scoop of mash shocking. It was a child's portion at best. Did ask just eat for a refund but as the food was delivered they didn't refund and suggested I took it up with the restaurant witch I did they was happy to refund untill they relized I'd left a 1 star review on just eat so still no refund 🤷‍♀️ sorry but nothing like what they advertise on there Facebook and if you don't want 1 star reviews don't send out 1 star food simple 👍
