About This Pub

Ah, The Playhouse, what a gem it is for anyone popping into Colchester for a drink or a bite. I've got to say, it's one of those places that really delivers on value without making you feel like you're settling for less. The prices are spot on; you can snag a pint of Stella for under four quid, and the food deals are generous too, like getting a drink thrown in with your meal – it's just so easy on the wallet. Plus, the building itself is a treat; it's got this old theatre charm with posters from the 1950s and different levels for seating, including a fun stage area where you can sit back and soak it all in. It's perfect for catching up with mates or even making new ones in that lively atmosphere. On the flip side, though, being a Wetherspoons means it's more about straightforward, no-frills options rather than anything innovative, so if you're in the mood for something a bit more upscale, it might not hit the mark. And let's be honest, it does get bustling at times, which can make it a tad overwhelming if you're after a quiet corner. All in all, it's a solid spot for a casual outing – I'd pop in again without a second thought, especially if I'm keeping things light on the spending.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The prices are absolutely unbeatable – you can get a pint for just £3.80, which is brilliant for keeping things affordable without skimping on quality.
  • It's set in a magnificent historic building, originally a theatre, with posters on the walls and different levels that make it feel really atmospheric and unique.
  • There's a great variety of seating options, from cosy booths to the stage area, so it's easy to find a spot that suits your group for a relaxed chat.
  • The food and drinks are solid and reliable, with deals that include a drink, making it a top choice for a quick, satisfying meal.
  • The overall vibe is welcoming and cheerful, with plenty of choice that encourages meeting new people or enjoying time with mates.
Cons
  • As it's a chain pub, it sometimes lacks that personal, one-of-a-kind feel you get from independent spots, so it might not stand out as much.
  • The food and drinks are pretty basic – think straightforward options rather than anything fancy, which could disappoint if you're after something more gourmet.
  • It can get quite busy, especially during peak times, which might make it a bit noisy or tricky to find a table without a wait.

Another amazing spoons. Paid only £3.80 for a pint of Stella. That's a price you can't beat. Food is great as well. And I am only in Colchester for a few days. Will be coming back soon

Magnificent building, wished I lived closer to enjoy the surroundings, the ambience, meeting new friends, and all at the typicalyl wetherspoons competitive low prices.

Another Wetherspoon in an interesting setting. A former theatre and cinema in the 1950s by the looks of the posters on the wall. Tables and booths of varying sizes laid out over different levels make it easy to find a nook that suits. We found a booth up on the stage area. Ordered on the app as it works well and is so convenient. Tried the festive pizza (chicken, stuffing, brie, bacon) and Hot and Spicy chicken (half chicken, naga chilli sauce, chips, coleslaw). Better than expected! Chicken half was a very good sizeand juicy. The Naga chilli sauce was separate - good flavour, hot but not crazy hot as we thought it might be. Pizza toppings worked well and dough was good.

I've given four stars because it's cheap! Had a coffee ☕ which was fine and some toast with marmalade, also good. Recommended you sit on the stage to look back at the bar and upper tier.

Cheap and cheerful. Plenty of choice and plenty of different options. Choose the food first because some options come with a drink as part of the deal, so no point in buying another drink as well. We like the cardboard cutout figures watching the diners from the balcony level!
