About This Pub

Ah, Hudson House, it's one of those places in Colchester that I've heard mates rave about for its sports bar vibes, and from what I've seen, it's got plenty going for it. Picture this: you're settling into a cosy booth with your own telly, sipping on a well-poured beer or one of those unique cocktails, and tucking into a hearty burger or a sharing platter that's full of flavour and decent value. The staff can be really chummy, popping over to check if everything's alright, and the atmosphere is just right for watching the game or having a proper chinwag without shouting over the noise. But, let's be straight, it's not all smooth sailing – I've come across stories of food arriving in dribs and drabs, leaving you waiting around, and a few times the service hasn't been as responsive as you'd want, with the odd unhelpful chat from the manager. Still, with an overall rating hovering around 3.6, it's clear there are more good days than bad, and for anyone up for a casual night out near the cinema, it's a solid choice. I'd say give it a go, but maybe keep an eye on the timings and go in with realistic expectations – after all, every pub has its off moments, right?

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • They've got a fantastic selection of beers, gins, and unique cocktails that really hit the spot, especially with those 2-4-1 deals making it great value for a night out.
  • The food is a winner – think tasty burgers, wings, and sharing platters that are perfect for a relaxed meal, and it's all served in a chilled atmosphere with friendly staff checking in to make sure you're happy.
  • Love the booths with their own TVs; it's brilliant for catching the game, like rugby or whatever's on, without missing a beat – makes it feel personal and fun for groups.
  • The overall vibe is spot on for a sports bar, with a beautiful, rustic decor that's ideal for casual chats or even an intimate date, and it's conveniently located near the cinema in Colchester.
Cons
  • Service can be a bit hit or miss, with some folks waiting ages for their food or dealing with meals coming out at different times, which puts a damper on the experience.
  • There have been a few grumbles about staff responses, like not getting much help when things go wrong, and the manager not always handling issues as smoothly as you'd hope.
  • It might feel a tad quiet or empty at times, which isn't ideal if you're after a buzzing atmosphere, and based on some reviews, it doesn't always live up to expectations for consistency.
  • Opening days seem limited to about five a week, so it's not always an option when you fancy a spontaneous visit, which is a shame for a lively spot like this.

Shocking place won't come here again. We came here for food, 4 adults, 3 kids ordered food, and mine came out 20 mins before the next meal. We then waited at least 45 mins after mine before the last meal came out. Spoke to the manager and got told if you wanted it the same time you should have asked??? We cook things fresh. 3 kids were waiting at least 30 minutes after mine they were hungry and upset. The manager should be a manager no wonder it was almost empty when we walked in.

Big selection of burgers and decent selection of beers. Was pretty empty when we arrived so had our pick of seats. Took one of the booths with the tvs and they kindly changed it to the rugby. Bonus! Food was tasty and came pretty quick with server checking in if all OK. All in all can't fault it and definitely worth a trip especially since they do buckets of chicken wings.

Went here before the cinema for food and drinks, we had a chicken share platter it was very tasty and good value for money, we also had a couple of cocktails which were on a 2-4-1 deal. The atmosphere was very chilled and the staff were very friendly.

If you are looking for a quiet place for an intimate date , somewhere you can listen to yourselves without shouting and have a lovely conversation with a superb beautiful ambience and decor , look no further than Hudson house . The sheer beauty of the space got me . The only down point for me is that they don’t have a kitchen . If that’s fine with you and you want bottomless drinks 🍹, then no worries .

Well kept place set in an industrial theme. Didn't eat here this time and if the staffs response time is anything to go by I won't either. Had a pint and made some work related calls then popped to the loo and found an upstairs outdoor smoking veranda so I thought oooh maybe I'll have another. Went back to the bar and stood there for probably 10 minutes whilst the bar staff (a bald bearded man and a lady with pink hair) proceeded to walk past me without acknowledging me for the remainder of the time I could be bother to be ignored. Needless to say I left and went to a rival for a more alert member of the bar team to serve me instead.
