About This Pub

Oh, let me tell you about The Guildford Arms – it's one of those pubs that just warms your cockles the moment you walk in. Tucked away in the heart of Edinburgh and family-run since 1896, it's got this incredible rococo plaster ceiling that makes you stop and stare, all while serving up an amazing array of real ales that I've not seen matched elsewhere. The staff are absolute stars, always up for a chat and happy to let you try a few before you commit, which is a lovely touch. And the food? Well, it's proper pub grub done right – tasty, filling, and won't leave your wallet weeping. It's a lively spot without being overwhelming, great for a relaxed evening with mates, but do keep in mind it fills up quickly, especially if you're after a table for dinner. On the flip side, if you're someone who likes a bit of music in the background, it might feel a tad quiet with just the hum of conversation. All in all, it's a brilliant little find that balances tradition and a welcoming feel, and I'd say it's well worth popping in for a pint or a bite when you're next in town.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • A superb selection of real ales, with tasters on offer to help you find your perfect pint
  • Delicious and reasonably priced food that's spot on for a satisfying pub meal
  • Friendly and attentive service that makes you feel right at home from the get-go
  • A gorgeous traditional atmosphere with that stunning rococo plaster ceiling – it's like stepping back in time
  • A lively yet welcoming vibe that's ideal for catching up with friends over a drink
Cons
  • It can get pretty busy during peak hours, so you might want to book ahead if you're planning to eat
  • The lack of background music means it's more about conversation, which isn't for everyone if you fancy a bit more buzz

I was looking for a nice pint of cask ale and they had a great variety of them (the biggest I've seen around). I was offered a proof of a few of them and made my decision. The ale was tasty and the service was great. The atmosphere is that of a traditional pub but with no music, just the sound of dozens of voices echoing around. I strongly recommend it for the ones who enjoy a nice local beer.

Though only a short stop during our visit from fleeting visit from Australia, I have say that this was an excellent yet unassuming stop during a busy and warm day in the beautiful city of Edinburgh. The food was superb and very reasonably priced. The Ales, Wines and Gins available for consideration and available to compliment your meal or for a quiet moment of reflection were excellent. The staff were exceptionally friendly and knowledgeable on the food and alcohol servings, with opportunities to discuss your preferences. Would highly recommend a visit and will certainly try to revisit in the future.

Food is great and the atmosphere is fantastic. During busy periods I would definitely recommend making reservations to dine. Otherwise, just enjoy socializing and a pint or more!
