About This Pub

Ah, Jackson the Tailor – it's one of those Edinburgh spots that really pulls you in with its warm, inviting atmosphere and that classy decor that makes you feel like you've stepped into something special. From what I've gathered from folks who've been, the staff can be absolute gems, going out of their way to make events like birthdays unforgettable, and the cocktails and food are spot on, leaving you with that satisfied glow. It's perfect for a relaxed evening with friends or a bit of celebration. But, let's be honest, it's not all smooth sailing – there have been times when service drags, like waiting ages for a drink or having to hunt down a menu, which can take the edge off the fun. Still, with an overall solid rating, it's clear the good bits often shine through, so if you're heading out for a pint or a fancy drink, I'd say give it a go, especially on a quieter evening to dodge any potential hiccups. All in all, it's a place with real charm, just keep expectations balanced and you'll likely have a cracking time.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The staff are incredibly friendly and attentive, often going above and beyond to make your visit memorable, like they did for a birthday celebration I heard about.
  • The atmosphere is cosy and full of energy, with classy decor that really sets the mood for a great night out.
  • Cocktails and food are top-notch, with plenty of lovely options that keep people coming back for more.
  • It's a fantastic spot for special occasions or just catching up with mates, especially when the service hits its stride.
Cons
  • Service can be hit or miss, with some experiences involving long waits for drinks or menus, which puts a dampener on things.
  • The bar area might feel a bit cluttered or unprofessional at times, as one person mentioned with personal items taking up space.
  • It gets busy and that can lead to slower attention, making it less ideal if you're after a quick and seamless visit.

Sadly the service downstairs at Jackson The Tailor is abysmal. Booked a table for food and drinks, shown to table at 7.30pm then waited at least 15 mins to be asked if we wanted a drink. The drinks then took another 15 minutes to arrive and then I had to ask for the food menus! Eventually ordered our food and another drink, the drinks took another 15 minutes to arrive and the starters arrived at 8.55 pm! Was beginning to lose patience with the wait for the main courses which again was ridiculously long! The atmosphere and ambience is great but it clearly needs more than one member of staff dealing with the table service.

Had a great time at Jackson the Tailor. The ambience was really cozy and had a nice energy to it. Our server Jenna was super attentive and friendly. She made a killer martini and checked in with us just the right amount. Helpful without being overbearing. Definitely made the visit more enjoyable!

Thank you for making my daughter's recent birthday celebrations SO special! Everyone went out of their way to make sure we had the BEST evening. On the night, the staff could not have been more helpful, professional or friendly. Everyone loved the venue itself, with its classy decor and amazing cocktails and drinks menu. It was perfect in every way. We will definitely be back.

Great food, lovely staff and nice cocktails! Would recommend and will be back. EDIT I did come back last week with 2 friends from abroad and it was an exceptional experience, despite the place being busy The staff went above and beyond. Thank you for the great experience once again!

We had known about The Newsroom but had never noticed this speakeasy, we were excited to visit on a Saturday night. Surprisingly, they said to order at the bar, which was fine by us. The lone bartender had a bunch of personal items cluttering the counter behind them, and my partner said they were following drink recipes to make the drinks. However, in the 2 rounds we had, my partner must’ve been up at the bar for 30-40 minutes total. The speakeasy itself was pretty empty, but they were clearly making drink orders for upstairs. So while we were one of the few tables downstairs, I ended up wondering what on earth was going on. Additionally, they offered the full range of food items from The Newsroom, and it actually got smoky and greasy in the bar from this. The decor and atmosphere was great, but it was ruined by the smells of greasy food. I think Jackson the Tailor should prioritize drink orders from customers waiting at the bar, not from upstairs. Perhaps customers wanting food should just be funneled to The Newsroom. Finally, I felt the cocktail list was a little too “classic” to make much differentiation, the bar is positioned as a specialty cocktail bar after all. I think they could be more creative and come up with more original drinks than a vesper or Hugo spritz. I enjoyed the vibe but unfortunately the wait in an empty bar was far too long to be worth it.
