About This Pub
Oh, let me tell you about The Pelican Inn – it's one of those pubs that just hits the spot for anyone who appreciates the classics. I've got to say, the real ales from Wye Valley and their guest beers are an absolute treat; they're well-kept and come with a great variety, including some top-notch ciders for those who fancy something different. The atmosphere is spot on too – no flashy distractions like fruit machines or telly blaring sports, so it's perfect for settling in with friends for a proper natter. The staff are dead friendly and make you feel welcome from the get-go, and little touches like the log fire on chilly evenings or the beer garden when the sun's out really add to the charm. It's family-run and sits right near the cathedral, which means it gets lively on rugby days, but that's all part of the fun. On the flip side, the place is a bit on the cosy side with limited space, so if you're in a larger group, you might find it a squeeze. And if you're not a fan of ales and prefer lagers, well, they're only available in bottles, which isn't everyone's cup of tea. All in all, though, it's a winner for a relaxed pint and some good company – I'd definitely recommend giving it a go if you're in the area.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
Fantastic selection of real ales and ciders, including Wye Valley brews and plenty of guests – perfect for beer enthusiasts looking for something traditional and varied.
-
Lovely traditional atmosphere without any fruit machines or sports TV, making it a peaceful spot for genuine chats and enjoying a pint.
-
Friendly and helpful staff who create a welcoming vibe, whether you're popping in for a quick drink or settling in for the evening.
-
Cosy log fire in winter and a charming beer garden in summer, adding to the seasonal appeal and making it feel like a proper local haunt.
-
It's family-run and close to the cathedral, with a buzzing energy on days like Gloucester rugby matches – plus, it's won loads of awards, which really shows in the quality.
Cons
-
The space can feel a bit snug with just a small room upfront, so it might get crowded on busier days and not ideal if you're after more room to spread out.
-
No lager or pilsner on tap, only bottled options, which could disappoint if you're not in the mood for ales or prefer something lighter.
-
Without an official website, it's a tad tricky to check details online before heading over, though that's a minor niggle in this digital age.

Very popular local pub, no fruit machines, no sports TV, traditional beers, real ales, affiliated to Wye Valley brewery, but plenty of guest beers as well. Annual beer festivals with 70 beers available. Also plenty of cider. Log fire in Winter, beer garden in summer, winner of many Camera awards! Great beer, great regulars. Come and be one!
Family run pub close to the cathedral, wye valley ales plus choices of other real ales,no lager/pilsner on tap only bottled, choice of the usual bar snacks and pickled onions, buzzing atmosphere especially on Gloucester rugby home days, very recommended
Staff were friendly, polite and helpful. Great selection of real ales available. Small room as you walk in, but another room to the right. Wooden floors throughout. Wheelchair friendly. Photos covering the walls. Beer was good. Enjoyed my visit.
Absolutely fabulous pub. Not my first time in here and won't be the last. Brilliant range of well kept cask beer and a fantastic atmosphere both pre and post rugby. Some great clientele who were well up for good conversations. Wye Valley beers were all superb; HPA, Butty Bach and Wholesome Stout.
Honestly one of the very best pubs that I've visited. Had no idea that Wye Valley offered such a range of ales. A welcoming fire, good bar staff and super beer. So good that we went back again. Would give it SIX stars if I could. Multi award winner and very easy to see why
