About This Pub

Ah, The Paper Mill in Apsley – it's one of those pubs that really pulls you in with its prime spot overlooking the Grand Union Canal, where you can sit back with a cracking ale and soak up the scenery. I've got to say, the atmosphere is spot on; whether it's curling up by the log fires on a chilly evening or enjoying the outdoor terrace on a sunny day, it feels like a proper welcoming spot for families and friends alike. The drinks are a highlight too, with Fuller's classics that never disappoint. But, and I hate to say it, the food's where things can fall a bit flat. From what I've heard from others, some meals come out overcooked or not as promised, and it's a tad expensive for the quality – like paying gastro pub prices but getting something more ordinary. Service varies; sometimes it's friendly and efficient, but other times it feels like they're not quite on top of things, leaving you to sort yourself out. Overall, it's worth a visit for the location and vibes, but maybe stick to the drinks and keep expectations in check for the grub. You'd probably have a grand time if you're just popping in for a quick one!

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The location is absolutely spot on, right by the Grand Union Canal with stunning views that make it perfect for a relaxing pint or a sunny afternoon out.
  • They've got a great selection of ales and drinks, which really hit the spot if you're after something traditional from Fuller's.
  • The atmosphere is lovely, with warm log fires in the winter and a welcoming outdoor terrace for those warmer days, making it a family-friendly spot all year round.
  • Friendly service stands out in the positive reviews, with staff being approachable and the place buzzing with a community feel.
Cons
  • Food quality can be hit or miss, with some dishes coming out overcooked or not quite as described, which is a shame given the prices.
  • It's on the pricey side for what you get, especially when the portions don't always match up to the gastro pub billing.
  • Service isn't always up to scratch, with a few mentions of staff being inattentive or too caught up in their own chats to check in.
  • The menu selection feels a bit limited at times, so if you're after something more adventurous, you might be disappointed.

Very poor. DIY service, food poor value, (5 overcooked scampi plus chips £22 ??. Dessert not as described) . No response from staff when mentioned. Normally a fan of Fullers but not this one. Great location though.

Great location, tranquil atmosphere. The food is ok but selection is limited. Drinks though are great. If you are in the area, pit-stop there for some beer is a good idea.

listen i hate reviewing places that are bad, especially when the workers are friendly but i want to be honest. i was not impressed with the food one bit. its very expensive, gastro pub prices yet the food is nowhere near representative of the prices they charge. the steak was tough and chewy, with the sandwich pretty bland, and the scotch egg was tasteless and very fatty. ketchup and vinegar was cheap which isn’t a problem but when you put it in a heinz and sarsons bottle at a pub that advertises as ‘top’ you are left a bit confused. the service was terrible, no one comes to the table and orders are put through randomly so we were left waiting 5 minutes after half of the food had arrived despite the order going through at the same time. we were also told that they didn’t do boxes or bags for left over food and handed over a roll of foil? you cannot do that and charge crazy prices for food. The building and area are lovely but i would really find another pub with better food

Tonight I wasn't too hungry so went for the brushetta . Staff we too busy chatting to each other . Never had Brushetta with salad tomatoes straight out the fridge before . Not to my liking. Staff never approach me to even ask how my food was . I did eat it . Poor service and attention to customers.

We stopped here for lunch after a birthday adventure tour. We were very satisfied with everything. The view is very nice, on a nice warm summer day, delicious food and friendly service.
