About This Pub

Ah, The Packet Steamer Beefeater in Bootle is one of those pubs that feels like a trusty local haunt, you know? It's got that warm, approachable vibe where you can pop in for a quick lunch or linger over a meal with friends. I love how they've sorted out those lunchtime specials – eight mains for under £8 from Monday to Friday – it's an absolute bargain for tucking into something like fish and chips or a classic burger without breaking the bank. The staff really shine through; stories from folks mention helpful servers like Ann and Hannah who make everything feel effortless and cheerful, which adds a nice touch to the whole experience. Plus, with outdoor seating and a function room for get-togethers, it's brilliant for watching the match or celebrating with the family. On the downside, it's not all smooth sailing – a few have mentioned meals turning up cold or not quite cooked right, and service can be patchy, especially if you're in a larger group and things don't arrive together. Still, with its solid reputation and that homely atmosphere, it's worth giving it a go for a relaxed evening; just keep expectations realistic for a standard pub grub setup, and you'll likely have a good time.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The staff are absolutely lovely and go out of their way to make you feel welcome, like chatting with old mates over a pint.
  • They've got cracking deals, such as eight mains under £8 during lunchtime on weekdays – perfect for a budget-friendly catch-up.
  • The atmosphere is spot on for a relaxed vibe, with options for outdoor dining, live sport, and even a function room that's great for family gatherings or events.
  • Food choices are solid, especially for breakfast or hearty classics, and it's nice to see them serving up feel-good meals that hit the spot.
Cons
  • Food quality can be a bit inconsistent; some dishes might arrive cold or undercooked, which is a shame when you're looking forward to a proper meal.
  • Service can sometimes feel uneven, like when meals in a group don't come out at the same time, leaving everyone a bit out of sync.
  • It's decent but nothing particularly standout – the grub is reliable rather than exceptional, so it might not wow you on a special night out.

Very disappointing. My food was all cold when it arrived. The hadhbrowns were somehow undercooked, despite being golden on the outside - they were limp and soggy, but had undercooked hard and slimy potato in the middle. The mushrooms were dry and wrinkly. The toast was cold and dry. The beans were cold. And we waited a long time for this to arrive too. This was supposed to be part of an all you can eat breakfast, but you had to give your order to the waitress and wait until your entire groups orders had been taken and prepared before you saw any of your food. We ordered 30mins before kitchen close but by the time our food arrived, they had closed the kitchen so we weren't able to order anything more. The service wasn't very good either, with the waitress even missing out an entire person's order. Out of the 6 of us, noone was impressed with the food or service. We enjoyed this restaurant several years ago but now, we shall not be returning.

We are here with family and friends for a family get together. We pre ordered all our meals. The meals were delivered quite quickly but as there were only a few staff by the time all meals were delivered some had almost already finished their meals. Food was hot but nothing special. Not sure that they are staffed for a large group but as they have a private side room you do expect they should be able to cope with the numbers and keep the standards. We've eaten here before in the main restaurant and the food served then was much better

I used the function room for my daughters christening. There was approximately 35 people in the group. The room was ready for us when we arrived. The staff were friendly and accommodating. Service was very quick and the food was lovely. Everyone was happy and I'd definitely use the room again for a similar function

Enjoyed a lively meal and a catch-up with friends and had a wonderful time. We didn't feel rushed at all. It was a great atmosphere. The food was delicious. I've eaten there over many many years and have often been served by Ann C. She is so very helpful, nothing is too much trouble for her. You always get service with a smile😊 Ann has a great connection with children. I have recommended many people to go there.

We had dinner tonight in the packet steamer. We were seated straight away by the lovely hostess Hannah. She couldn’t do enough for us. She was very friendly and took our drink orders and shown us to our table, explained who would be waiting on our table. Food was fast and cooked to perfection. New menu is also great! One of my favourite places to visit.
