About This Pub
Ah, The Old Wellington—it's one of those pubs that really sticks with you, isn't it? Tucked away in the heart of Manchester, this historic spot from 1552 has got that authentic old-school vibe that's just charming, with its timbered walls and tales of bygone eras like the cotton industry and even shorthand inventors. From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, folks absolutely rave about the food; the steak and ale pie has this lovely beer-infused twist that makes it stand out, and the fish and chips are spot-on—crispy, not greasy, and served in generous helpings that hit the spot after a long day. The drinks selection is brilliant too, whether you're after a smooth ale or a cheeky cocktail, and the staff are proper friendly, always up for a chat and making sure everything runs smoothly, even when the place is buzzing. On the flip side, it does get heaving at times, so you might end up waiting a bit for your meal or a seat, and with prices on the moderate side, it could add up if you're planning a big night out. All in all, it's a top choice for a relaxed evening or a catch-up with friends, offering that perfect mix of tradition and good times, though I'd say it's best visited when you're in the mood for a bit of hustle and bustle rather than a quiet corner.
Pros and Cons

A cracking selection of drinks, from perfect pints of ale to tasty cocktails, perfect for a good catch-up with mates.
Cons
-
It can get quite lively and packed, especially in the city centre, so you might have to wait a bit for a table or your food.
-
With moderate prices, it might feel a tad pricey if you're just popping in for a quick pint, though it's worth it for the experience.

First time dining at an old English Pub and I enjoyed both the vibe and the food.
Very good portions. The steak and ale pie had a brief scent of beer in the stuffing which gave a special twist than a regular pie. Crispy crust. Smooth and buttery potato mash.
Just had a great time at The Old Wellington in Manchester! The fish & chips were crispy and perfectly cooked, the Meat Pit platter was smoky and packed with flavor, and the drink selection hit the spot, especially their ales and cocktails Great vibes, historic setting, and solid service. It's definitely worth a stop if you’re in town!
Ashamed that after 20+ years of drinking in and around Manchester, this was my very first time visiting The Old Wellington, but it certainly wont be the last. Friendly, welcoming staff, large drink choice both at the bar and in the fridges, and lovely food. We had the fish and chips and both agreed they were superb. Will definitely add this to my future pub crawl venues from now on!
Omg this place is SO CUTE! Catherine was our server and despite having a fully booked house upstairs she was very attentive! We walked in with no reservation and were warned ahead of time we’d have to wait for food because of the private dinner on the top floor, and it was totally worth the wait. We appreciated the heads up and were happy to sit and enjoy our drinks while we waited for food. The fish and chips were fantastic. We also really enjoyed the scotch egg, halloumi fries and the sausage and mash. Bar staff was knowledgeable about beers and liquor offerings, which was helpful as we’re here from the US and wanted to try some local options. We finished our night with the sticky toffee pudding which was delicious. We will be back next time we’re in town!
Easy 5 stars on all aspects!
I had set a high expectation on this restaurant after reading the reviews and they didn’t fail me!
The best fish and chips I’ve had, not oily but still crispy. The sea bass dish is really nice too. The white sauce is spot-on. Food is delicious and served in generous portions
Service is great! The waitress took a fantastic picture of me and my friend
Atmosphere is very cozy! Perfect lighting and warm atmosphere that I’d highly recommend anyone who’s looking for amazing food and service
