About This Pub
Ah, The Old Siege House Bar & Brasserie – what a spot for a proper get-together in Colchester. From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, the food really steals the show; imagine tucking into a Sunday roast with perfectly done veggies and roast potatoes, or starting with some white bait that's spot on. The staff are just lovely, always on hand to make sure everything runs smoothly, which makes it ideal for anniversaries or a casual pint and bite. It's got this charming old building vibe that adds a nice touch of history to your visit. On the flip side, keep an eye on the bill because that service charge might pop up unexpectedly, and while the cooking is generally brilliant, there might be the odd dish that's not quite perfect. Overall, it's a solid choice for us pub enthusiasts – go for the great grub and atmosphere, but maybe plan ahead to sidestep any minor niggles.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The food is absolutely top-notch – think generous portions of excellently cooked roasts, like that chicken or pork belly that's got everyone raving, and even delightful desserts like Biscoff cheesecake.
-
The staff are incredibly friendly and helpful, making you feel right at home, whether you're popping in for a casual meal or celebrating something special.
-
It's set in a lovely historic building, giving it that charming, traditional pub vibe that's perfect for a relaxed Sunday lunch or a catch-up with mates.
-
With a solid 4.5 rating from plenty of folks, it's clear this place knows how to deliver a great experience, especially for those seeking quality British grub.
Cons
-
They sometimes add a voluntary 10% service charge without mentioning it upfront, which can feel a bit sneaky and leave you surprised when the bill arrives.
-
There have been occasional slip-ups with the cooking, like a fish dish being just a tad overdone, though it's not a common complaint.
-
The operating hours seem a bit inconsistent from what I've seen, so it's worth double-checking before you head out to avoid any disappointment.

Sunday lunch 2 courses. Opted for the chicken roast, which came with generous and excellently cooked vegetables and roast potatoes. Biscoff cheese cake for dessert. Food was high quality and service was exemplary. Lost a star for adding voluntary 10% service charged without mentioning it before the meal. Apart from that minor annoyance it was a most enjoyable lunch.
Celebrating our Wedding Anniversary. The food was DIVINE 🤪 compliments to the chef, not just for their talent in the kitchen but also such a creative mouthwatering menu 🤪 The waiting staff were very friendly and gave suitable time between courses. Great food, great place
A lovely old traditional pub. Great food. Staff are very friendly and helpful.
Really excellent food.
Perfectly-cooked scallops with a lovely black pudding accompaniment, beautifully presented on a bed of salad, with just the right amount of dressing.
Halibut was good but slightly less excellent, as it was just very slightly over-cooked. But only fractionally, and that's being picky.
I had a delicious rump of lamb in a lovely sauce that was both fresh and minty, but also deeply unctuous and satisfying. I mean, really good.
My daughter had chicken nuggets, which were delicious - light and tender and fluffy, moist and just lovely. That level of attention to detail for even the kids' menu speaks volumes of the standard of the kitchen.
The restaurant is set in an interesting building with plenty of history. Service was friendly and good. One ale on tap - I forget the name, but it was well-kept and interesting with hints of apricots, and very tasty. Decent wine list.
Reasonably priced for the standard of the cooking and food - felt we'd had decent value for a lovely meal.
Will definitely return.
This restaurant in a historic 15th century building, is worth a visit. We went on a Sunday and had the roast. This is one of the best Sunday roasts I've had in the UK. I had the white bait starter and stuffed pork belly as a main. Both were superb and the portions are generous. Worth a visit.
