About This Pub

Ah, The Old School House – it's one of those pubs that really captures the heart of Aberdeen with its historic granite walls and lively atmosphere. I've got to say, when it's on form, it's brilliant; the staff are absolute gems, always up for a chat and quick to recommend a cracking beer or even help with directions around town. Pop in for breakfast or to watch the big games like the Women's Euros, and you'll find a relaxed spot with a beer garden and fun activities like shuffleboard to keep things entertaining. It's budget-friendly too, which is always a plus for a casual get-together. On the flip side, though, it's not perfect – I've heard tales of meals taking forever and arriving less than ideal, like cold burgers or missing bits on your plate, which can put a bit of a downer on the experience. And that rule about no one under 18 after 8pm means it's more of an adults-only affair in the evenings, so if you're planning a family meal, you might want to wrap up early. Overall, it's a solid choice for a pint and a chat, but go in with realistic expectations and you'll likely have a great time.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The staff are incredibly friendly and helpful, always ready with a smile and even tips on local spots like directions to Pittodrie.
  • It's got a lovely, relaxed atmosphere that's perfect for catching live sports or enjoying a quiet meal, especially in that historic granite building which adds a real charm.
  • The food can be spot on when it's good, like a crispy hot honey chicken burger or a hearty breakfast to start your day.
  • Plenty of great facilities to enjoy, such as a beer garden, pool table, and being dog-friendly makes it a welcoming spot for all.
  • It's affordably priced, so you won't break the bank for a pint and a bite.
Cons
  • Service can be a bit hit or miss, with some experiences involving long waits for food that arrives cold or not quite right, like missing items on a breakfast order.
  • Food quality isn't always consistent – you might get a perfectly cooked meal one time and a burnt burger or overcooked dish the next.
  • There's a restriction on under 18s after 8pm, which could put a damper on family outings in the evenings.
  • It can feel a tad disorganised at times, especially if you're in a rush and the app isn't working, leaving you to sort things out at the bar.

Early morning breakfast, great ambient atmosphere and the service from Sean was first class and very helpful. He even recommended a nice beer to wash down the food with. Asked him for directions to Pittodrie to which he told me which bus to get and where to get off. I explained I wanted to buy a top and view the new trophy and he said he was going to wait for the new top to come out and hopefully get the full tour of pittodrie on his next day off. Thanks for your help Sean 👍

Well, how can I summarise this experience...they have a nice building at least. Ordered the big breakfast and after an excessive 35 minute wait it came out without haggis, black pudding and tomato and without butter for the toast. I complained and eventually got the missing items. However, the rest of the items were cold by the time all items were present. Shame. The food server was less than useless and seemed distinctly disinterested. Stick to beer at this place, food is a waste of time. Small caveat- I didn't have beer so cannot say how good it is. But surely it has to be better than the food. The food quality was pretty poor. Bacon and Lorne sausage rock hard, overcooked eggs and a number of beans I could count using two hands (guys, I know this is Aberdeen and we have a reputation for being tight, but come on, serve more than a level tablespoon of beans). One good point was they were very quick to offer a replacement or refund when I complained at the bar. Having seen the quality of the food I swiftly opted for a refund. Oh, one more positive...the diet coke was quite nice.

In for lunch today early afternoon with my young son. Staff were very friendly and accommodating and was a nice relaxed atmosphere. Food was good too!

Hot Honey Chicken burger was really crispy and yummy. The bacon cheese burger was a hard disc of petrified meat. Terrible burger.

Ordered food at bar as app wasn't working. Told bar staff we had 80 minutes before we had to leave and the table were at was booked for someone else. The food took 50 minutes to arrive, was cold, over cooked, burnt burger, had clearly been sat for a while before serving to us. Staff had to be asked to give us cutlery and had a couldn't care less attitude. Unfortunately this is increasingly the experience we have had in Greene King establishments. Having worked in the industry ourselves we find it sad that hospitality is so sloppy now and staff have no pride in serving good pub food anymore. There were not a lot of tables in for food so the kitchen should have been able to cope better than this.
