About This Pub

Ah, The Old Hare and Hounds – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a proper community hub in Birmingham. From what I've gathered chatting about it, the staff really stand out; they're always cheerful and attentive, making you feel right at home whether you're there for a quick drink or a full meal. The food's a highlight too – think delicious options for everyone, from vegan treats that could whisk you away to another dimension to classic pub fare like mixed grills that hit the spot after a country walk. It's got that lovely beer garden for sunnier days and snug interiors for when the weather turns, plus it's super family and dog-friendly, which is great if you're out and about with little ones or your four-legged pal. On the flip side, it does close a bit early sometimes, so if you're hoping for a lively evening out, you might need to plan accordingly. And while it's reliable and comfortable, being part of a chain means it doesn't quite have the quirky edge of some independent pubs, but overall, it's a solid choice for good times and a warm welcome without any fuss.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The staff are absolutely lovely and welcoming, always ready for a chat and to sort out any needs – it's like popping in to see old mates.
  • The food is spot on, with a cracking selection including vegan options, hearty Sunday roasts, and dishes that leave you wanting more, all at a fair price.
  • It's dog-friendly with a nice area for furry friends, perfect after a stroll in the nearby Lickey Hills or parks.
  • The beer garden and cosy interiors make it a brilliant spot for catching up with friends or family, rain or shine.
  • Handy location near the M5 and M42, so it's easy to nip in for a relaxing pint or meal after exploring the area.
Cons
  • The opening hours can be a tad early, typically wrapping up around 4 PM, which might disappoint if you're after a late-night session.
  • As it's part of a chain, it sometimes lacks that unique, one-off pub charm, feeling a bit more standardised than some independent spots.

As this is my local pub, I've been in many times and every time I'm welcomed by the lovely staff, Sarah, Caitlin and Becca. Always happy to chat and to accommodate any needs There's a dog friendly area too, so if you've been for a walk up the Lickey Hills, it's a nice drop in for a drink, food and treats and water for your dog. Chefs Owen and Carmen are great too and the skin on fries are delicious.

Popped in here after a walk round Lickey country park, I'm glad I did, mixed grill and pork belly were fantastic. Definitely going again, next time I'm in the area.. All staff fantastic, usually there's 1 miserable one in a pub, but here, all very friendly especially bar lady with the glasses, didn't see her name, and the fellow serving the food Monday at 4pm is, and compliments to the chef etc. Toilet looked a bit rough but that's my only fault...

Went with a friend 9th April for a catch up over food and drink, greeted by a lovely lady who showed us to our table near the loos which was great as my clumsy mate on crutches (again!!🤣) My friend had the mixed fish with chips and I had a halloumi skewer, both delicious, ate it all, great value for money even before blue light discount. It was quite busy but we still had excellent service, will definitely re visit, thank you
