About This Pub

Ah, Duttons in Chester – it's one of those places that really hits the spot for a relaxed meal or a catch-up with mates. I've got to say, the food is a standout; their seasonal menu is full of fresh flavours, from those signature pies to lighter sharing plates, and they've nailed the pub classics with thoughtful options for all diets. The location's brilliant too, tucked away near the cathedral, making it ideal for escaping the city buzz while still being in the thick of it. Pair that with a pint in the beer garden on a sunny day, and you're onto a winner. On the flip side, though, service can be a mixed bag – most of the team are absolute gems, but every now and then, you might run into someone who's not quite up to speed, which can put a small dampener on things. And let's be honest, some prices feel a bit on the high side for what lands on your plate, especially if you're opting for breakfast, where it's not always as impressive as the rest. Overall, it's a solid choice for a good night out, but I'd suggest keeping expectations in check for the finer details to avoid any letdowns. If you're in Chester, give it a go – you might just find your new favourite haunt!

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food is absolutely spot on – think elevated pub classics like pan-fried seabass and hearty pies, with plenty of seasonal specials that make every visit feel fresh and exciting.
  • The atmosphere is just lovely, whether you're relaxing in the beer garden with a pint or enjoying the cosy indoor vibes, especially in the heart of Chester city centre near the cathedral.
  • Service is generally top-notch and friendly, with staff going above and beyond to make you feel welcome, which really adds to the overall experience.
  • They've got a great range of options for everyone, including vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free choices, so it's easy to find something that suits your needs.
  • It's a fantastic spot for gatherings, from family meals to a quiet afternoon with a book and a drink.
Cons
  • Service can be a bit inconsistent at times, with some staff not quite on top of things like providing condiments or handling simple requests.
  • Prices might feel a tad steep for what you get, especially for breakfast, where the quality hasn't always lived up to expectations.
  • There have been a few gripes about specific dishes, like breakfast baps that were a bit underwhelming and lacking in basics such as butter.
  • It might not be the best choice if you're after something quick and straightforward, as a couple of experiences have felt overpriced for the effort.

A great place to have a family get together. Food was excellent and most of the service was good. One or two of the servers were a bit clueless when you wanted pepper or other condiments that didn't appear. to be available

Breakfast is extremely low quality. Price is really high. Can’t fault the service, but you don’t even get butter on your toast with your singular piece of dry shrivelled bacon and cheapy sausages. 30 quid for 2 soft drinks and 2 breakfast baps.

Very nice place to relax. I had sone Guinness in the afternoon while reading a book. Sitting outside beside all the busy streets around. Lovely place with very nice staff.
