About This Pub
Ah, let me tell you about The Northern Whig – it's one of those places in Belfast that just feels special, tucked away in the historic Cathedral Quarter with that old-world charm mixed in with a modern twist. I've heard from folks who've been there that the food is a real highlight; think mouth-watering roasts that are packed with flavour, or burgers that hit the spot just right, all without stretching your wallet too far. The atmosphere is spot on too, with live music adding a fun buzz that makes it ideal for catching up with friends over cocktails or a hearty meal. On the flip side, it can get a bit hectic at peak times, and those operating hours aren't always crystal clear, which might catch you out if you're planning a spontaneous visit. Still, with such glowing feedback from visitors loving the welcoming service and overall experience, it's definitely worth checking out for a balanced night out – the good far outweighs any minor niggles, in my book.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The food is absolutely spot-on – from juicy burgers and hearty roasts to delightful desserts like ice-cream with bischoff biscuits, it's all packed with flavour and leaves you wanting more.
-
The atmosphere is brilliant, with a mix of historical charm in that iconic Belfast building and live music that really brings the Cathedral Quarter to life.
-
Service is top-notch; the staff are friendly, welcoming, and go out of their way to make you feel at home, just like chatting with mates over a pint.
-
It's in a prime spot in Belfast city centre, open seven days a week with flexible hours, making it easy to pop in for a relaxed lunch, evening meal, or cocktails without breaking the bank.
-
Overall, it's a welcoming spot that captures the vibrant energy of the area, perfect for food lovers and those after a good drink.
Cons
-
The operating hours seem a bit muddled in places, with varying closing times listed, which might leave you scratching your head about when to head over.
-
As it's not claimed by the owners, updates or responses to feedback might be a tad slow, so if something's not quite right, it could take a while to get sorted.
-
With its popularity, it can get busy, especially in the heart of the city, so you might face a wait for a table or that perfect spot by the bar.

My parents & I both agree, food & drink was all delicious and definitely worth visiting! The atmosphere is great with the live music & the roast was especially good - the roast bacon melts in your mouth and everything was so flavourful, I've never been so happy to eat vegetables before 😆
Food here was amazing. Dervla was our server and he did a fantastic job. A breath of fresh air compared to other restaurants around the area, fancy but not too pricey too. Wish this restaurant was in my hometown.
The food was tasty. The atmosphere was amazing! I loved the ice-cream with bischoff biscuits 🥰
Four of us popped in yesterday evening for a quick bite. Delicious meal! Lovely surroundings! Served by the fantastic Mark... nothing was a problem. YES was the theme of the night!
We had a starter and dessert. Loved it! The place is big, comfy seating, staff friendly and we were welcomed even if we did not want to eat a full course menu. I reccomend the place in Belfast city center!
