About This Pub

Oh, let me tell you about The Dark Horse – it's one of those places in Belfast that just pulls you in with its charm. I love how they've kept all that historical flair alive, with antique furniture and artefacts that give you a proper glimpse into the city's past; it's like stepping back in time while still feeling completely at ease. The staff are an absolute delight, always ready with a smile and spot-on recommendations, whether you're after a flawless pint of Guinness or one of their well-crafted dishes from the menu – that crème brûlée is something else, I have to say. And don't get me started on the courtyard and that Game of Thrones door; it's all so unique and adds a bit of magic to the atmosphere, especially with live music going on. On the flip side, though, they've got this rule about not letting you mooch around without a purchase, which feels a bit off if you're just curious. Plus, the menu doesn't have loads of choices, and it's shut on Sundays, so planning around that might be a hassle. All in all, it's a fantastic spot for a casual drink or bite, but it's worth knowing the quirks to make the most of it – I'd say it's ideal for anyone wanting an authentic, heartfelt pub experience without the frills.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming, making you feel right at home from the moment you walk in.
  • The atmosphere is absolutely spot on, with beautiful antique decor, historical artefacts, and a cosy courtyard that gives a real sense of Belfast's past.
  • They serve up some cracking food and drinks – think perfect Guinness, delicious coffee and teas, and well-executed dishes from a changing menu, like that exquisite crème brûlée.
  • Unique touches like the Game of Thrones door and live music add a fun, memorable vibe that's hard to beat.
  • It's a proper Belfast institution with a warm, inclusive feel that draws in all sorts of folk for a good time.
Cons
  • They can be a bit strict about letting you wander around without buying something first, which might put a damper on just popping in for a quick look.
  • The menu is limited and changes often, so if you're after a wide range of options, you might find it a tad restrictive.
  • It's closed on Sundays, which is a shame if you're planning a weekend visit and fancy a spot of relaxation.
  • Not really set up for bigger events, as it's open to the public during the day, so it might not suit groups looking for something more private.

Lovely food. Staff really really friendly. Guinness perfect. A wooden door from the Games of Thrones on view. Great wall-art in the courtyard. A must-see.

Stopped in for a quick bite & brew while on a day visit to Belfast ... MISSION ACCOMPLISHED👍 Staff, food & atmosphere are top-notch & would HIGHLY recommend ... French chef turns out well executed dishes from a limited but oft-changing menu ... the crème brûlée was exquisite! Fun & attentive staff, along with a very comfortable atmosphere, make this a compulsory stop next time in Belfast.

We stopped off for a coffee and to take photos. Coffee was good and it's a lovely pub as far as atmosphere and interior design. They will not let you so much as wander around without a purchase first though so be aware of that if you plan to visit for a gander or to see the GOT door.

We had such a fun time here! On our brief visit to Belfast, we explored some of the nightlife and this place is a real treat. Similar to a few bars we visited, there were multiple generations of patrons here and a local told us this is a sign of a good Irish bar. The live music inside gave the place a lively vibe and their courtyard patio area is a great area as well, whether you just want some fresh air or additional seating, but you at least must get a look at the art out there. Personally, I enjoyed Trump and Putin depicted as two of the four horsemen of the apocalypse.

We didn't eat here, but visited on a Friday afternoon for a quick drink and then here to round our Saturday night off. It's a great spot. Friendly staff and the doorman on Saturday seats you. They had live music on the Saturday, great atmosphere and the courtyard is fantastic.
