About This Pub

Ah, The North Star – it's one of those pubs that really captures that classic British charm, tucked away in the leafy streets of Ealing, just a stone's throw from Ealing Broadway Station. I've got to say, it's got this inviting mix of period features and modern vibes that makes you feel right at home the moment you walk in. The live music on weekends is a real highlight; it's lively without being overwhelming, and perfect for catching up with friends over a pint or a cocktail. Plus, their drinks selection is spot on, with rotating craft beers and well-made cocktails like a delicious margarita that one reviewer raved about. On the food front, the lunch deals are an absolute bargain – think £11 for a meal and a soft drink, and when it's good, it's genuinely tasty and satisfying. The beer garden is another winner; it's cosy and great for those sunny days when you fancy a bit of outdoor sipping. But, let's be honest, it's not all smooth sailing. Service can vary wildly; some visits are met with cheerful, professional staff, while others leave you scratching your head over a curt response or unhelpful attitude, especially if you're asking about the menu. A couple of reviews mentioned food let-downs, like underwhelming chicken wings or items not in stock, which is a shame because it could elevate the whole experience. Overall, with a solid 4.3 rating from heaps of reviews, it's clear this place has its strengths, particularly for a relaxed afternoon or evening out. If you're heading there, I'd suggest going for the atmosphere and drinks first, and maybe keep expectations in check for the food and service – that way, you're in for a pleasant surprise rather than a disappointment. It's all about that balanced pub experience, isn't it?

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The atmosphere is absolutely brilliant, especially with live music on the weekends that really gets everyone in the mood for a good time.
  • They've got some cracking deals on food, like that £11 lunch option which includes a soft drink – it's great value and the quality can be spot on.
  • The cosy courtyard beer garden is a lovely spot for al-fresco dining when the weather's playing ball, adding a nice touch to the overall experience.
  • There's a good selection of drinks, including rotating craft beers and cocktails, which makes it fun to explore something new with mates.
Cons
  • Service can be hit or miss; some staff are friendly and professional, but others come across as rude or dismissive, which puts a bit of a dampener on things.
  • Food quality isn't always reliable – a few folks have had disappointing experiences with dishes like chicken wings not living up to expectations.
  • There might be issues with menu items not being available, so it's worth double-checking before you settle in for a meal.
  • While it's generally buzzing, it can feel a tad quiet during off-peak times, which might not suit everyone looking for a lively vibe.

I like that place as there is live music at the weekend. I went there twice so far and really enjoyed it. I haven't tried any food there so I can not say anything but love the atmosphere here.

Nice atmosphere and delicious margarita. Service wasn't so great from the girl who served us (even though it was a quiet early-evening and we were the only people ordering at the bar at the time). Asked for a whiskey sour and the bartender rudely said 'we don't do whiskey sours' as she turned away from me. Strange.

Walked in this evening looking forward to a roast dinner and a catch up with my friend. The first thing I asked the female bar tender was “do you have everything available on the roast menu?” And she quickly replied yes and proceeded to double check the till and assured me that they had everything available. I decided to order the roast chicken for £18.50 (which I never normally do) because I noticed that it was accompanied with pigs in blankets and a bacon stuffing which sounded lovely. My friend ordered the nut-roast (she’s vegetarian). The food took a rather long time and we patiently waited. Once our dinner had arrived, the first thing I noticed was how the vegetables were very minimal, three tiny pieces of carrot and two slices of parsnips (I was half expecting them to bring out a separate bowl of veg). Next to my dismay I realised there was no bacon stuffing and no pigs in blankets (the whole reason I ordered the roast chicken). I immediately went to the bar to inform them they were missing and the girl behind the bar went to speak with the chef. She came back a few moments later to say that they had actually sold out of the stuffing and pigs in blankets and had now noted that on the till and could offer me some beef croquettes or Hallumi fries instead. I was rather unhappy about this as I had already asked if they had everything, but I decided to order the halloumi fries and I also asked if they had any broccoli or greens that I could have instead. The lady came back and said the chef will do the halloumi fries but that they didn’t really have any greens as it’s “late in the day”. Again why wasn’t I told this when I originally asked? Instead they sent out half roast dinners without informing us and hoping we wouldn’t realise what was missing. So we proceeded to ask if we could have a second replacement item as two things were missing (maybe some chips?) however their supervisor told them that the halloumi fries usually cost £7.50 and are substantial enough to cover the missing items. WOW. For starters I never wanted the halloumi fries, I wanted what I ordered and never received but also i paid £18.50 for half a dinner. Maybe they should have kindly refunded me the £18.50 and I would have happily paid the £7.50 instead. However by this point I had already eaten some of the chicken because I was starving and so they were not willing to refund anything. Might add nobody apologised for this mistake! I have attached a photo of my friends nut roast to show just how little veg there was (also had to ask for my gravy!), unfortunately I never took a photo of mine, I wish I had! Comparing this photo with another review from 3 months ago, ours looks like it came from a different restaurant. This was our first time here and it will be our last. What a negative experience and put a real downer on our Sunday! I would suggest if you want a Sunday roast to look elsewhere as the price they charge compared with what they offer is extortionate!

Lovely lunch with a friend. The lunch deal at £11 inc soft drink is very good value, and great quality too. Service was excellent, and the bar staff very friendly and professional. It’s a large pub, so relatively quiet for midweek lunch, but that meant it was easy to chat, extend our time there with coffees. Also very close to the tube so an easy place to arrange a meet up. Check it out!

I've visited The North Star quite a few times for a drink but unfortunately tonight really needed a review to warn others. It's ok inside and the atmosphere is pretty good. The service isn't particularly friendly but tonight the food (value for money) was really poor. I tried the chicken wings and chicken tenders, they're on the menu for £9.50 each but there was a 2 for 1 offer on so cost £9.50 instead of £19 (the barmaid also said you couldn't mix & match but the menu said otherwise). Even at this price the serving size was absolutely awful, barely a snack and about the same size as you get from a cheap chicken shop down the road for about £3. Photos included to show just how small the portions were (4 tenders that were about the size of my fingers), and the plates are side plates too, not even dinner plates. Then you add £7+ for a pint of beer and you really do leave feeling like you've been robbed (and obviously still hungry). Very poor, not somewhere I'll be eating again if this is what you get for your money.
