About This Pub

Ah, The Newshouse – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a proper local gem in Nottingham, tucked away near the train station, making it dead handy if you're popping in after a journey. From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, folks absolutely rave about the beer selection; they've got five cask lines and a bunch of craft kegs, all kept in tip-top condition, which has earned it a spot in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide for years. It's that kind of place where you can sink into a comfy corner with a pint and maybe try one of their pizzas or that fresh desi food from the kitchen – I hear the lamb tikka wrap is a winner. The staff really make it shine too; they're friendly and chatty, creating a welcoming atmosphere that's perfect for a quiet drink or joining in on events like poker nights or grabbing a discount if you're a sports fan. On the flip side, though, the hours can be a bit tricky – it seems like it's not always open late or might have closures, and food options aren't available every day, so you might need to plan around that. Overall, it's got that classic pub charm with a good mix of tradition and fun, but it's not without its little niggles, making it a reliably enjoyable choice if you keep an eye on the details.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The selection of beers is absolutely spot on – they've got a fantastic range of real ales and craft kegs that's been praised in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide, making it a real treat for ale enthusiasts.
  • The staff are incredibly friendly and knowledgeable, always ready to chat about the brews or help you pick something new, which really adds to that warm, welcoming atmosphere.
  • It's got a proper traditional pub feel with fun games like darts and bar billiards, plus they show sports on the big screen, so it's great for a casual get-together or a bit of friendly competition.
  • They offer tasty food options, like delicious pizzas and some cracking desi dishes from their kitchen, which you can enjoy in the cosy bar or take away.
  • There are some brilliant events and deals, such as discounts for sports fans and poker nights, plus everyday offers that make popping in even more appealing.
Cons
  • The opening hours can be a bit inconsistent or limited, especially on Sundays and Mondays when some services like food might not be available, which could put a dampener on spontaneous visits.
  • It's listed as currently closed in some data, which might mean it's not always reliable for a quick pint, so it's worth checking ahead to avoid disappointment.
  • While the beers are generally well-kept, a few folks have mentioned they're just ' alright,' so it might not blow your socks off if you're after something truly exceptional every time.

Popped in today to try the new menu on offer from D-Grilled dhaba kitchen which is cooking up fresh food within the pub. I had the lamb tikka wrap and it was blummin' lovely! Food is served in a takeaway carton, so you can eat in the pub if you want to, sit outside in the sunshine or take it away to eat if you want/need to (which I did as my lunchtime is short - but I also had a swift half while I was there too 😉) Can fully recommend a visit for both drinks and food.... And maybe even have yourself a game of Bar Billiards as well, it's quite addictive once you try it!
