About This Pub

Oh, what can I say about Cock & Hoop? It's one of those pubs that just feels like a proper local gem, tucked away in the bustling Lace Market area of Nottingham. From the moment you step in, you're greeted by friendly staff who are dead keen to help you pick from their brilliant range of beers – think local East Midlands brews and even some sour beers that are a treat to find. The food's another winner; I've heard rave reviews about their afternoon teas and Sunday lunches, and the all-day pizza menu means you can pop in anytime for a bite. Plus, with daily deals on drinks, it's easy to make an evening stretch without emptying your wallet. On the flip side, though, it's not all perfect – a few mates have mentioned odd experiences with the daily offers not quite living up to the hype, and it doesn't always outshine the other bars around town. Still, the cosy atmosphere and those outdoor spots make it a lovely place to while away an afternoon or evening. If you're heading to Nottingham for a pint and some good grub, I'd say give it a go; it's got that homely charm that keeps you coming back, as long as you keep expectations realistic.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The staff are absolutely lovely and really know their stuff – they'll chat with you about the beers and make great recommendations, which makes for a welcoming vibe.
  • They've got a fantastic selection of beers, including cask and craft options from local East Midlands breweries, plus some rare finds like sours that you don't see everywhere.
  • The food is a real highlight; think tasty afternoon teas, hearty Sunday lunches, and all-day pizzas that hit the spot without breaking the bank.
  • It's a cosy, traditional spot in the heart of Nottingham's Lace Market, with charming outdoor areas that give it a bit of a European feel – perfect for a relaxed catch-up.
  • With daily deals on drinks, wines, and cocktails, it's easy to find a bargain, making it a great choice for a night out without spending a fortune.
Cons
  • There have been a few hitches with the daily deals; some folks have mentioned not getting what was advertised, which can be a bit disappointing.
  • It doesn't quite stand out from other local bars in Nottingham – it's got potential, but it might not be the top pick if you're after something truly exceptional.
  • Service can be inconsistent at times, with a couple of reviews pointing out issues that could do with some management tweaks to make everything run more smoothly.

Popped in for a quick drink with family while doing the Nottingham mystery guide. Met by friendly bar staff who advised about the beer on offer and I had a lovely sour, (not many places have these on keg). My husband enjoyed his choice too. The next day we went to the National Justice Museum, which happened to be just across the road and my daughter was keen to go in to eat this time, so we all had some food and it was delicious. The same friendly staff were on the bar and remembered us, which was lovely. Glad we'd not read recent reviews prior to this as we may have given it a miss, and that would have been a shame as we enjoyed it both days.

Putting this on here mainly to see if anyone else has experienced this. I have historically enjoyed the cock and hoop (I even stayed in the adjoining hotel before my wedding), but I’ve had two strange experiences recently. The last two times I have been here, I have asked for the daily deal advertised on multiple signs - the first was a pizza and pint deal in March, and the second was their wine Wednesday deal today. On both occasions, I was told that the deal was no longer running, despite the sign being outside (one of which would have had to have been actively put out that day). On the second occasion, I was told the deal had come to an end two weeks ago - in which case, why was the sign out? To further thicken the plot, their Instagram post exactly 2 weeks ago (the day I was told the deal had been cancelled) advertised wine Wednesday, with no indication that the deal was coming to an end. I find this baffling, and really damaging to my opinion of and trust in the pub. If you are not running a deal, that is fine, but you should make sure you are not advertising this deal. It may well be that I was just unlucky, but the repeated incidents makes it feel as if the deals are not real!

Cute looking & with potential but far from a recommended bar in Notts as even the local chain bars are better. Top tip for "The Management" recognise the quality of your staff & use them as an opportunity to get better as it ain't working ATM. Good mix track though...

Compliments to Chef Cristina for a delicious afternoon tea. The best scone I’ve had, crisp on the outside, fluffy inside. The waiter (forgot name) was exceptional, keeping us topped up with drinks, and had THE shiniest shoes! Will definitely be back

Great pub, like a labyrinth inside and the outdoor areas are great. Very European feel to the terrace and enclosed garden space. Food was very nice - Sunday lunch for £15. Only critique would be for thicker gravy but that’s only my preference! We were well looked after by the staff
