About This Pub

Ah, The Mother Superior – it's one of those places that just hits the spot in Edinburgh's Leith area. From what I've gathered from folks' experiences, it's got this effortless charm where the food really shines; I mean, hearing about that chicken schnitzel and those tasty potatoes makes me want to dash over straight away. The service is another highlight – the team seems genuinely engaging and fun, whether it's recommending a dram or making your birthday memorable. It's got a great vibe too, with cocktails that nod to local culture and a welcoming feel that keeps people coming back. On the flip side, it looks like some visitors pop in just for drinks and haven't sampled the grub, so it might not be everyone's go-to for a hearty meal every time. Plus, the website's a simple Facebook page, so you won't find much detail online, but honestly, that's a minor quibble when the place itself delivers such a solid, enjoyable experience. If you're in the area, I'd say give it a go – it's that kind of spot where you end up having a brilliant time without overthinking it.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food here is an absolute delight – think buttery, perfectly seasoned potatoes and chicken schnitzel that's stuck in my mind for weeks, making it a real treat for a good meal.
  • Service is spot on; the staff are friendly, professional, and full of craic, like that barmaid who picked out a brilliant dram and even spoiled the dog with treats.
  • It's got a fantastic atmosphere with a welcoming vibe, perfect for birthdays or just popping in for a pint, and they've got a cracking cocktail menu with Trainspotting-themed drinks that add a fun twist.
  • Being pet-friendly is a lovely bonus, so you can bring your furry friend along for the ride.
Cons
  • It seems like not everyone has tried the food yet, so if you're specifically after a full dining experience, you might want to check that out first based on what's shared.
  • The online presence is a bit basic, just a Facebook page, which means you might not find loads of info before you visit.

We stumbled into here as the other place we wanted to go for lunch was shut, and what a piece of serendipity! I had the chicken schnitzel and potato salad and it was one of the best meals I have ever eaten. I'll be thinking about those buttery, perfectly seasoned potatoes for weeks... There was a great selection of beers, including a decent non alcoholic one, and the guy behind the bar was really pleasant and helpful. An excellent Edinburgh find!

Popped in for a pint n a dram, great service from the barmaid, didn't catch her name but believe she's a kiwi if not Australian, picked out a doozy of a dram for me and gave my dog some treats and play time, Been here a few times n always been stellar. Haven't eaten here tho so no review there. Big up Mother Sup!

Was in for a friend's birthday last week and the reception could not have been nicer. The staff were amazing; very fun to talk to, professional, and just all round great craic. Victoria in particular was an absolute star and really made our night. Fantastic gem of a place, well worth a visit and my friends and I will definitely be back.

We came for lunch today and ordered from the King of Feasts @ Mother Superior which until recently was only available at the Polwarth Tavern. I ate the fried chicken plate with Tajin watermelon and hot sauce. My pals ate fried chicken sandwiches and my other half had the country fried bacon and grilled cheese. We shared the cornbread as a side. First of all, everything was delicious and freshly cooked. There's no hot pass in the kitchen so food comes as and when it's ready. All of our main dishes came together and the sides a few minutes later. Everything we ate was delicious and really indulgent. The cornbread especially, is very buttery and rich. The chicken was perfectly cooked and the watermelon was a refreshing side. It's not every day you see country fried bacon in Scotland so it was a real treat. We're famous for battering and deep frying anything so why not bacon? There were plenty of pickles and beef tomatoes on the sandwich to offset the richness and saltiness. The chef came to our table to check how much we enjoyed the food and chatted with us. He was super friendly and we will definitely come back to try more dishes soon. A lush new addition to the Leith food options.

The best bar in Leith. The friendly and down-to-earth team always give the place a great vibe. The newly revised and refined cocktail menu features some incredibly well made and well served classics as well as a selection of mother superiors own "Trainspotting" themed drinks. For non cocktail drinkers there's still a very acceptable gin selection and a hugely in-depth whiskey list. Definitely worth checking out if you're looking for good energy and good drinks.
